On a personal note: If you are in support of bringing our troops home, Friday, Nov. 25th in Carlsbad, CA there is a powerful plea for peace. Go to www.BringTheirBuddiesHome.com and sign up now and they will email to you a memorial page for one of the fallen troops. Print out this page and pin it to your shirt. Come to Carlsbad Blvd. at Tamarack Ave, dressed in black, and stand with together. They will begin setting up at 2:00 PM and will be ready for the press and public to view the living work of art by 3:00 PM.

Sledgehammer Theatre is moving out of St. Cecilia’s, its home for nearly a decade. To commemorate this important San Diego Cultural Event, Sledgehammer is presenting an epic four-night ritual “de-installation” of the space. During the first two performances, December 7 and 8, the audience will actually witness performers ritually remove all vestiges of theatrical hardware: lights, set, stage, and seats. The “strike” of the theater will be amplified and accompanied by live music. This will be Wagnerian “total theater” in the finest tradition of Sledgehammer’s rowdy past. Bring earplugs – hardhats provided.

The final two nights, Dec. 9 and 10, Sledgehammer will mourn the loss of one of San Diego’s longest-lived theatres by staging a “wake” and “burial.” During these performances, St. Cecilia’s will be used as it was originally intended – as a funeral chapel. The twist is that St. Cecilia’s will be hosting her own wake and burial. As at most wakes or funeral services, the audience will be asked to participate with the family of performers and various San Diego theatrical luminaries in providing testimonials about the space and its impact on the San Diego Cultural Community over its nearly 30 years as a key performance venue in downtown San Diego. After the final performance on December 10, the audience will join the ensemble on an upbeat funeral procession through our neighborhood, culminating in a Lights Out Party in the theater – the kind of party only Sledgehammer can throw.

Performances of A/WAKE are 8 p.m., December 7-10, at St. Cecilia’s Playhouse, 1620 Sixth Avenue (at Cedar). Tickets are $25 for December 7, 8 and 9; Tickets are $40 for December 10 – the price for December 10 includes a Sledge Party after the performance to celebrate the life of St. Cecilia’s. Tickets can be purchased at the door, by calling 619-544-1484, or on the website at www.sledgehammer.org.

It has reached our attention that a local San Diego couple is struggling to recover Camille Pissarro, "Rue St. Honore," which hangs currently in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. This painting was forcibly taken from Mr. Cassirer's grandmother by the Nazis during in 1939. We feel the morally correct action is to recognize Mr. and Mrs. Cassirer as the rightful owners, and return the painting. If you want to know more, please go to this website to read all the details http://members.cox.net/artgirls/Pissarro/PissarroReturn.htm  Mr. and Mrs. Cassirer strongly urge you to write a letter of support to the Spanish government. justiceinspain@terra.es

The Committee reports on their favorite features of the SDVAN website – send us your comments and we will list them on our testimonial page

Rosemary KimBall - It is a magnificent effort to organize the seemingly unorganizable....at this one site you can find the most up to date information on any day's activity in the Arts via the Calendar. Then you can find your favorite artist or supplier...and if that is not enough you can go deeper and learn about How to Collect, How to Create a Collection,....there is more and more……

Jim Reeves – This site is non-competitive and very co-operative. I want to promote that spirit everywhere we can to encourage cooperation with all art resources.

Ann Berchtold – Because the arts community is so spread out over a vast geographical area, SDVAN provide a cyber meeting space. This is place that creates a bridge to communicate, co-operate and create.

Dennis Batt – The Calendar is the most fun and most cool part of the site. Information right at hand all the time.

Paul Vauchalet – The San Diego Visual Arts Network is the only window that I can use to schedule my calendar. It show everything.

Lisa Roche - As a local San Diego artist who "re-engaged" in her passion for painting 2 and a half years ago, I found it difficult to find much collaborative information regarding local artistic suppliers, galleries, or associations anywhere, let alone on line. The Internet has become such an integral part of our daily lives and I'm thrilled to see an organization that not only understands this, but also is promoting it with its mission. Now, when one needs to find out what is happening in the San Diego art community, needs to find the best place to purchase material for their work, or desires to promote their artistic endeavors, all they need is one URL: http://www.sdvisualarts.net! I believe that this is a wonderful resource that will save so many of us an incredible amount of time and effort, and offer a wonderful and easy-access community for all of us! Thanks SDVAN!

On a personal note: My own work is featured in a collaborative two woman exhibition with Cheryl Tall at Mesa College from March 28 to April 26 with a reception on March 31 from 4:30. A lecture about the show starts at 7 pm. Mesa College Art Gallery, 7250 Mesa College Drive D-104, SD 92111. I hope to see many of you there! We are looking for art supplies that are still in usable condition (paper, paints, brushes, colored pencils, small easels, etc.), to donate to El Refugio (The Refuge). This is the only non-profit shelter available for homeless elderly in all of Baja California and has no fundraising machine or government funding. It relies solely on donations and volunteers. Keeping elderly minds active and giving them things to do with their hands and with their creativity can be very therapeutic and certainly beats sitting in a chair, staring at the wall. Lisa Roche, artist in Carlsbad and SDVAN committee member, is helping a friend, daughter of the pastor who works for the United Way, who is coordinating a larger drive to the shelter in April or May, and is specifically looking for your usable art supplies. Please help - email Lisa at lisa@gypsycreations.com or call her at home (760.931.6112). She can come pick donations up. Make a list that can be signed off on, just in case these items can be considered tax deductible.

On April 21 st 2005, the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project will be hosting its annual fundraiser event. We would like to take this opportunity to ask for your support. We are hoping to receive donations of goods and services to be used as prizes for a raffle or a silent auction as well as direct contributions of funds or services. Donations may be sent to Dr. Ellen Beck 9500 Gilman Drive, MC 0696, La Jolla, CA 92093 or we would be happy to arrange pickup. Checks should be made payable to the University of California Regents, indicate Free Clinic Project in the memo line. As part of UCSD, the Free Clinic Project is a certified 501(c)3 organization, thus all donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law. Any questions you have can be addressed to Alida Gertz (760) 672-0925 alidamaria@gmail.com, or Carol Whitener (cbloomwhitener@ucsd.edu) at 858-534-6110. It is only through the support of community and donors like you that Free Clinic has come this far, and we hope to continue serving the people of San Diego.

For Your information:

Americans for the Arts is compiling a Creative Industries Report for San Diego and we want to be sure all our arts and culture organizations and artists are included.  The report will be an important advocacy tool and we need it to be accurate.  Judging from a preliminary report, we know that not all organizations or artists are being counted (e.g. the earlier report shows only two dance companies in San Diego County when, in fact, there are dozens!).

The data is being compiled from organizations and individuals that have a DUNS number.  Therefore, we are asking you to SIGN UP for your DUNS number with Dun and Bradstreet as soon as possible.  It is free and easy. It is also a good idea to have a DUNS number because it is now a requirement on all federal grant applications (including the NEA).Please sign up as soon as possible so that all arts and culture organizations are counted on the Creative Industries Report coming out soon.  We want to show the full creative power of our region!

Thank you very much! Dana Springs [DSprings@sandiego.gov]
