February...what a month! We have love in the air with Valentines Day, a celebration of history and achievements with Black History Month, hopes for good weather on Groundhog’s Day, and partying on the mind with Mardi Gras.

Mike Wofford presents: "How to Listen to Jazz"
This special event will take place on Tuesday, February 7 at 7:00 pm in the James S. Copley Auditorium of the San Diego Museum of Art. Prices are as follows: $14 members/$17 nonmembers/$14 for students with ID. This is a great opportunity to expand your understanding of Jazz and enable you to appreciate this wonderful genre on new levels with recording artist Mike Wofford. In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas
Between February 18 and May 14 make your way to the San Diego Museum of Art and check out this rare traveling exhibit containing 2,000-year-old Roman artifacts that are leaving Italy for the first time! Carlsbad Masquerade
On Saturday, February 25 from 6:00 pm to 12:00am, THE OUTDOOR ART FOUNDATION, in association with the Carlsbad Village Business Association and the Museum Artists Foundation, present the first annual Carlsbad Masquerade! The event, located at the historic Ocean House, will include entertainment by the Small Opera of San Diego followed by dancing to the Bayou Brothers and more. In addition to the entertainment, an Art Exhibit and Sale will also take place. Cocktail or Thematic attire is expected. December means holidays and what better way to celebrate than with art! Not to mention getting your holiday shopping done without stepping foot in the mall!

Shop Independent, over a dozen local artists and creators set up shop at The Other Side Café in North Park the fist Sunday of every month. Check out the creations Sunday, December 4, from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. There will be a street side fashion show at 2:30 and a silent auction/raffle from 12-2 to benefit Dunn-Razo Dance Company a local non profit arts organization. The Ordover Project Presents 15 local photography and glass artist from December 3 through

This month I decided to highlight the organizations that put together regularly scheduled events to make enjoying art fun and relaxing…not to mention some great holiday gift ideas….

Julian Open Studios This annual event is an opportunity to see the private studios of 12 artists in Julian. This self-guided tour occurs on Saturday and Sunday November 12-13 from 10 am- 4 pm. The tour itself is free, maps are $5. For More information check out www.julianstudios.org

Galleries down historic Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach will host 3 rd Thursday on Cedros November 17, 2005. Over 12 galleries will be open late and providing music and refreshments to give viewers a relaxing environment to do some gallery crawling.

San Diego Natural History Museum Wildlife Art Exhibit
Love wild animals? Check out the latest animals at the San Diego Natural History Museum. The first annual Wildlife Art Exhibition from August 12, 2005 through January 1, 2006 is going on now with hundreds of local artists displaying their work. Artwave La Jolla presented Haunted Aquarium

Pretty much EVERYONE has been to a haunted house, forest or hayride, but have you ever been to a haunted aquarium? Didn’t think so…but now you can! For three days the Birch Aquarium is transformed into a spooky place to look and learn. October 28-30 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm you can enjoy everything from pirate stories to trick-or-treating, and a nightly costume contest. Admission is $11 for members and $13 for the public. Experience an exceptional cultural event you will not soon forget. Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday for celebrating and remembering the lives of deceased loved ones. Downtown Oceanside becomes a Mexican Fiesta on October 30 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Ever want to learn to take great pictures underwater? Come and join experts Al Bruton and Lee Peterson Wednesday, September 7, at ASMP-SD for the chance to discover how. Al and Lee will cover a variety of topics including equipment, safety and a slide show of beautiful images set to music. Registration: Starts at 6:30 PM; Meeting begins at 7:00 PM. ASMP members $5 with reservations, $10 non-members with reservations, $5 students with reservations and student ID, $5 more at the door. We know you want to see the King Tut exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, but just don’t feel like doing the drive. Here is the perfect solution…take the bus! Gallery East (East County Art Association) is sponsoring a bus tour on Tuesday September 27. The cost is $50.00 per person this includes bus trip, admission ticket and treats. You are responsible for your lunch. The bus will leave El Cajon at 9:00am & return between 6:00 and 6:30pm. Seating is limited so call for reservations and additional information ASAP. There are several locations in San Diego that have ongoing open workshop time for those of use who want to get off our rumps and practice. These studios are open to all skill levels. Bring your own supplies and make sure they are odorless.

The Ubiquitous Bee Studio presents the Figure Workshop for drawing or painting from a figure model. Workshops are every Wednesday & Thursday night from 6-9pm. Go to http://www.ubiquitousbee.com for more information.

Ofest Sizzling Summer Beach Break Need plans this 4th Of July weekend? Head to Ofest where you will find a lil’ something for everyone. Oceanside will have everything from a Carnival to Concerts and Parades. While there make sure and see the neon exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art called Illuminations which continues until Aug 21.

Student Art Sale The Arts College International is having a student art sale July 8th (6-9 pm) and 9th (11-4). Come take a look at the student work and bring home that unique piece you’ve been looking for. While you are there why not check out the wonderful class offerings for all artistic skill levels.

July a month of Ladies Nights! March may be Women’s History Month, but July is all about women in Art. Check out the GIRL POWER! art show, Sat. July 2 nd, 7 till 10 @ The Music Trader. If that ain’t enough estrogen on July 17 head over to the Spanish Village Gallery in Balboa park to see the San Diego Women Artists (SDWA) group exhibit work from 11 of their members. Graham Flint at MoPA (Museum of Photographic Arts) Taking Photography to a new frontier, Graham Flint has built a camera with NASA clarity. Netherlands tour with the Tile Heritage Foundation from May 26 to June 2, 2005. The Tile Heritage Foundation is visiting the Netherlands in late May. The purpose of the trip will be to attend the opening of “Industrial Tiles 1840 – 1940,” in Otterlo . For the next four days we will tour with tile historian Hans van Lemmen and tilemaker conservator Joop van der Werf visiting private collections, tile factories and museums in Utrecht, Zaandam, Friesland, Leeuwarden, Harlingen, Delft and Gouda.
