Event Description In this workshop students will be introduced to the basic Limp Vellum binding structure. Developed in the 14th Century and used widely for commonplace books, this structure is made with a single piece of vellum folded around the text block, with the front and back covers being folded double. Students will sew the text block on leather straps, which will be attached to the vellum cover. We will make one headband on a sample card and then sew headbands onto the text block.
All participants are expected to come away with a finished Limp Vellum book and will have acquired the skills to make this book at home. Bookbinding experience, especially familiarity with sewing signatures, is recommended.

Event Description Poetic and captivating narratives weave in and out of wide-eyed women, plucked from modern day fairy tales, at Thumbprint Gallery’s most recent exhibition. The show titled “Once Upon A Time” presents eye-catching works by L.A. artists Mimi Yoon and John Park, opening June 9, 2012. Mimi Yoon’s artwork draws the viewer into her own in-between world where nude women stare out, yearning for our attention. Yoon’s images expose a talent for poetic painting which leads us into her wandering imagination, also reflected in her biographical poems, “I’m a gentle rabbit / restless inside, a fire breathing dragon.” Artist John Park’s images build new realms where human-like beings almost jump out from the canvas wrapped in a swirling vortex of color. His technique combines the structure of cubist works with the vision of surrealist expression. He uses geometric shapes to form a lively background and forms futuristic grey figures with multiple eyes caught in motion.

Madison Gallery is proud to present a new collection of large-scale sculptures by Matt Devine, including a nine foot standing piece, wall mounted works, and the artist’s first hanging ceiling pieces.

Devine creates non-representational works that are meant to evoke a sense of calm and controlled chaos.

“The search for harmony and balance is the driving force behind my work. The use of systematic repetition, intentional minimalism and controlled multiplicity are themes through which to quell inner struggle. Drawn to the strength, subtle beauty and endurance of steel, bronze and aluminum, I welcome error in my process, as it is a constant reminder of the trials in life and as an artist.”

Madison Gallery is proud to present new media paintings by internationally acclaimed artist James Verbicky.

Currently in high demand, these rare pieces stimulate the viewer with both content and texture. The three dimensional surfaces transcend traditional painting and venture into the realm of sculpture, and by utilizing vintage media, advertisements, and obsolete branding materials, Verbicky presents us with the result of decades of attempts to persuade, manipulate, and coerce through subtle and suggestive imagery. His works are at once deeply conceptual and hauntingly beautiful, capturing both forgotten and persisting icons of media and reminding us that we are constantly being influenced.

For Immediate Press Release Isaias Crow, Sacred Mother - Nurture Us Showing: Saturday, June 9th – Saturday, June 30th, 2012 Ray at Night Art Walk: Saturday, April 14th, 6-10 pm Artist Reception/Lecture: Saturday, June 30th, 7-9 pm Cirello Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming featured artist for the month of June, Isaias Crow who is debuting his new series of portrait paintings titled SACRED MOTHER- NURTURE US. Join us for an exclusive premiere with the artist on Saturday, June 9th from 6 - 10 pm, in conjunction with North Park’s Monthly Art Walk, Ray at Night. Also join us for a special Artist's Reception and Lecture by Isaias Crow at Cirello Gallery on Saturday, June 30th, from 7-9 pm. Witnessing the birth of his third born child, Isaias Crow came to a valuable realization: Women are powerful and magical beings. In early 2011, Isaias Crow was so inspired that he propelled a project, which encompassed 12 strong women that he had encountered through his lifetime. The project was titled WOMEN Source of Creation. Although a very potent and successful exhibit, Crow learned that several of the attendees loved the work yet they could not get past the idea that they where looking at someone else’s energy and portrait and not a reflection of themselves. Something that Crow was hoping to deliver, “I want to share via my paintings that the person that I am capturing in a portrait painting is mirroring you, the viewer.” Crow stated. Listening to his fans and inner intuition, Crow went back to work at his studio to further explore and experiment with this concept. An answer to this surfaced late 2011 through early 2012, C.R.O.L.O.S 2012 an acronym for Characters Rocked On Letters Of Style. In this collection, Crow used his root in Writing (or graffiti art as its commonly known) to depict patterns and energetic wavelengths as well as positive affirmations that are common in all of us, hence creating a personal portrait of not only him but the masses. This approach proved successful as the collection nearly sold out. Now, Crow will be applying a mix of both ideologies (Women Source of Creation 2011 and CROLOS 2012) to create a very exclusive and small collection of 6 original portrait paintings titled SACRED MOTHER - Nurture Us. “ I am ready to share with the world exactly what I set out to do in 2011, the truth that we are all one, this will be clearly expressed through my new collection of work,” Crow stated. This collection will be displayed exclusively at Cirello Gallery in North Park on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 from 6pm to 10 pm. Please come see for yourself this monumental collection.

Event Description May’s GoSee exhibition at Glimpse showcases two artists whose work is exemplary for creating peaceful dialogue within the home or office environment that it is hung in . With a first glance at Sally Samins’ work, one is struck by a strong use of color blocking. Upon further investigation, a beautiful and detailed world unfolds, characterized by applied textural elements, modeled color, raised dots (that beckon to be touched), pastels, crayon, and acrylic paint. By using a variety of techniques such as paint layering and dripping, writing and adding texture, Jan Lord is able to create abstract paintings that are fascinating to discover and to watch unfold before one’s eyes. On view until June 12th.

Event Description “Pressing Pause,” Dani Dodge’s current exhibit at L Street Fine Art, includes her largest paintings to date. In this show viewers will see Dodge’s work evolve into deeper contemplation of what it means to live in today’s society. Although the some of paintings are grand in size, the subject matter is quiet. The work is about moments between moments, when activity is buzzing all around and you stop to take a deep breath. The paintings will reflect the moments when consciousness is most acute: the moment of reflections and Pressing Pause. Dani Dodge's art is inspired by nearly two decades of work as a journalist. After being imbedded with troops in Iraq and being part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team, she left newspapers to focus on telling stories through her art. Dodge's work chronicles the struggles of everyday people through a lens tinted by life-and-death epics.
