  • Until July 7 LOG IN and ENTER NOW We are sponsoring a special August Portrait Banner for all portrait artists listed on SDVAN. We are hoping this banner competition will focus on 8-10 artists in connection with our sponsorship of the Movers and Shakers: Who’s Who in SD Visual Arts portrait exhibition opening Sept 5 at the Patrick Moore Gallery.We will use the banner submission form online and you must be listed on SDVAN to be eligible. See more details when you log in, enter your user name and password and then click BANNER to submit an image. There is no entry fee and no cash prize but the opportunity to showcase your image with a link to your website. Due date, Monday, July 7. On a personal note: Jeffery Laudenslager was robbed of a sculpture from his front yard in Encinitas. "Hokusai" is a kinetic work, 6 feet tall and has four moving parts made from titanium. He is offering a finders fee and you can see photo of this work on his website.

A+ Art Blog Letter from London by Patricia Frischer, the coordinator of SDVAN.    Dangerous Women Meet Cranky old Men in the A+ Art Blog : Eleanor Antin and Pamela Jaeger our SD Art Prize exhibition would be supported by the Bluestockings show at the National Portrait Gallery in London while Lucas Cranach the elder would probably prophecy doom for these independent women.

We are sorry for the glitch on the North County Times for the Vision to Page art writing contest. You still have time (until May 9) to win $300 if you can put some words together about the Innocence is Questionable show at CCAE….junior prize is $100 and we are offering internships on SDVAN as well.

On a personal note: I will be present (I was delighted to be one of the nominators) when Nina Karavasiles ( SD Art Prize New Contemporary, 2007 ) is honored with the SDAI Palette Award 2008 by the San Diego Art Institute Museum of the Living Artist . Her work will be shown at the Southern California Regional Awards exhibition, which opens on March 29th from 5-7pm. The show continues until May 11. I hope to see you there.

Join me on Thursday, April 17 th from 6:00 – 9:00pm at the University Club atop Symphony Towers, 750 B Street, 34th floor, San Diego, CA 92101 for an evening of expert-led discussion on what it takes to create and evaluate our own personal art collections. Guest speakers include Jori Finkel, frequent contributor on arts issues for the New York Times and Art + Auction Magazine, Patricia Frischer, coordinator of the San Diego Visual Arts Network and the San Diego Art Prize, and well known and loved regional artists Sinclair Stratton, Martin Sklar, and Jeff Yeomans. Please arrive a few minutes early to receive registration materials and pre-event refreshments. Wine, champagne, sushi and hors d'oeuvres included. Tickets are $50 and must be purchased by Monday, April 14th. Proceeds benefit the San Diego Fine Art Society , a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to helping art flourish in San Diego.   • New Performance Slam coming in April is a multi-genre Invitational also in support of California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum’s exhibition, Innocence is Questionable, featuring the six recipients of the 06/07 San Diego Art Prize. On Sunday, April 20 from 5 to 7 pm. approximately eight performing artist/groups (including dance, poetry, vocal, instrumental, performance art, art criticism, comedy and theater) will be invited to comment, critique, glorify and shed light on the visual art works of the six SD Art Prize recipients Raul Guerrero, Yvonne Venegas, Jean Lowe, Iana Quesnell, Ernest Silva and May-Ling Martinez. A new play about an art collection presented by Mo`olelo sounds wonderful.Permanent Collection is a play by Thomas Gibbons from Feb 21 to March 16 at 10th Avenue Theatre. When their conflict over eight important pieces of African art is uncovered by a curious journalist, a complex and bitter clash erupts over race, representation, art and the role of the media. Fire and Rebirth - Zhibit.org with San Diego Visual Arts Network and Synergy Art Foundation are sponsoring this online art competition and fund raiser. 100% of net proceeds from this juried event will go to support Synergy's San Diego Emergency Artists Support League (SD-EASL) . to help artists affected by firestorm. This is an opportunity to be recognized and rewarded and helps fellow artists in need along the way. Juried by  Rod Lingren (artist affected by the Cedar Fires of 2003). $1000 in cash prizes: $500 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd and $100 for 3 rd. We always welcome you to our SDVAN meetings, which are every other month on the second Tuesday at 10 AM. The next meeting is Tuesday, February 12 at 10 am. Let us know if you would like to join us and we will send you an address and driving instructions. We are working on a Movers and Shakers Portrait exhibition that will take place in the fall of 2008 at Patricik Moore Gallery as well as brainstorming the future of SDVAN in our Feb meeting. The meetings are also always an opportunity to network with other visual arts leaders.

We apologize for the any of you who visited the site from Sunday, Dec 16 to Dec 20. The site had temporary technical problem caused by the host server. We now have a new server, new newsletter service and several new grey hairs! My thanks to my fabulous husband, Darwin Slindee, for guiding me through this process.
