  • New Our banner is in support of the Annual SDVAN Holiday Potluck Lunch: Tuesday, Dec 11, 11 am to 2 pm ( 2487 Montgomery Avenue, Cardiff by the Sea, Ca 92007). Please bring one dish or drink for 8 to share. There will be a FREE jewelry and accessory exchange. Raid your closets and give new life to old treasures. The event will benefit Synergy Art Foundation, San Diego Visual Arts Network and Feeding America SD .

On a personal note: I am thankful in spades for a fabulous grant for our DNA of Creativity projects, for the three venues for our SD Art Prize and New Contemporaries exhibitions, for our upcoming 10th Anniversary celebration with Synergy Art Foundation and for the opportunity to party with our friends at our annual holiday lunch. Hope you all had a full and fun start to the party season and that you were in the black for black Friday.

  • We continue with our programs highlighting the best of the best with our SD Art Prize and its mentoring program for emerging artist showcased in the New Contemporariesexhibitions.


  • San Diego Visual Arts has positioned itself to be of optimum support for the visual arts community In 2013. The DNA of Creativity is one of the most inventive art and science collaborations for the STEAM initiative.(STEAM combines science, technology, engineering, art and math together). SD View Art Now,our smart phone app will pin points local arts events from the San Diego Visual Arts Network calendar on a GPS map identifying the viewers position. Our calendar is free and accesses the events in our directory of over 2000 visual arts resources. Both of these projects are moving San Diego in the right direction for innovative economic growth.

On a personal note: For the first time and to celebrate our joint 10 th year anniversary, Synergy Art Foundation and San Diego Visual Arts Network are hosting a joint fundraising bohemian bash in late April 2013. We had a fabulous Eat Your Art Out: a Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art School: Haunted High Tea hosted by Nikki Haritatos with model Zoe Tantrum and the artists are Albertine Feurer-Young, Nancy Carp, Yesenia Maybee, Matthew Hohlfeld. You will see over 250 visual arts exhibitions in painting, photography, sculptures plus contemporary performing arts including dancing and concert.   • New DNA of Creativity We are pleased to announce the launch of the website for the SD View Art Now smart phone app. This is only in beta test and all the links do not work, but you can read about the team and our progress towards a GPS tracking system for all events on our calendar. Fei Zhou did the stunning logo which is a memorial to Dennis Batt using his portrait to generate colors and the excitement connected with this first for San Diego. Watch this space for the further information and please continue to list your events on the site as these are the events that will appear on the google maps on the smart phones.
  • New August RAW Column is now posted. Gossip needn't be false to be evil - there's a lot of truth that shouldn't be passed around. Frank Howard Clark . This month there is a bumper crop of juried shows to enter.

I want to thank all the volunteers for the San Diego Art Prize 2012 at Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair. Twenty four Artists, students, art professionals and patrons are all helping us to spread the word about these artists and the San Diego Visual Arts Network. San Diego Magazine’s Women Who Move the City Event 2012 will take place on Tues, Sept 18, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at the La Costa Resort and Spa. This is the 7th annual event and we are pleased to say that Felicia Shaw (SD Foundation Arts and Culture) is our nominee and one of the 130 finalists for the 2012 Woman of the Year award. “This is a fantastic opportunity to network with some of San Diego’s most powerful and inspirational women,” says Jim Fitzpatrick, CEO and Publisher of San Diego Magazine.Tickets are $50 per person or $35 each for a pack of 6. Mayors Forum On Innovation will be held on Sept 5, 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the Museum of Photographic Arts hosted by the San Diego Innovation Alliance in partnership with KPBS. Mayoral candidates Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner will be questioned on their vision for San Diego as an innovation region .The candidates will be joined by moderator Erik Anderson of KPBS and an esteemed panel including Joyce M. Gattas, Ph.D., Dean, SDSU College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. Audience Members Are Encouraged to Send Questions to jeger@mail.sdsu.edu RSVP by September 3 to learning@bpcp.org. Girl Scouts San Diegoseeks a muralist (female preferably) to lead approximately 15 Girl Scouts in grades 6-8 to create a 10’ x 5’ portable mural to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting through a series of eight workshops.   • New The Hats Off for Life Exhibition SDVAN produced this show, which feature hats created by artists to honor and celebrate the lives of some of the residents of Fairwinds Ivey Ranch.   • New DNA of Creativity We are happy to announce the recipients of the DNA of Creativity grants. Batt App (a smart phone app to locate local arts events with an augmented reality component) Changing Oceans (project about the climate change and over fish shortages) Urban Succession (preserving wild life in urban settings) and PolyAesthetic Mapping (a structure to think about the collaborations that artists and scientist experience).   • New The is our first call for volunteers for the San Diego Art Prize 2012 at Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair., Sept 6-9, 2012. This year the fair is at Balboa Park Activity Center ( 2145 Park Boulevard, San Diego 92101.) There will be two shifts 3 ½ hours shifts on Friday, September 7, 12:00pm – 7:00pm and Saturday, September 8, 12:00pm – 7:00pm and two 3 hour shifts on Sunday, September 9, 12:00pm – 5:00pm. We are so pleased to be going forward with the DNA of Creativity project. We are holding a celebration on Thurs May 31 from 7 t 9 pm. If you want to join a team, do RSVP and we welcome you to come and meet some of the selected grant team members.

We will, of course, be present at the Thurs. June 7 Susan Street opening New Contemporaries 5 when the emerging artists selected by the established artists will be announced. I hope you can join us with some of the best artists in town,to party right into the summer season.

On a personal note:

On Sat. May 28 I will be among the crowd at Art Walk and also visiting the closing reception for Aliens at Zepf Alt. Gallery from 5 to 10 pm (1150 7th Avenue, SD 92101)

On Fri. May 4, we hope to be at the NTC First Friday to support Kira Corser at the Mandell Weiss Gallery in Dance Place presented by Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater. We will also stop in to the other spaces including Vision Quilt Museum to see the Secrets and Stories Exhibition and Lauren Carrera at Pulse Gallery.

On May 23, we will attend the Bronowski Art and Science Forum at 7 pm to hear Mary Devereaux , Ph.D., is a philosopher in the Research Ethics Program in conversation with Dena Rifkin, MD Professor of Nephrology both from UCSD

We are looking forward to two shows at the Athenaeum. The father and son are a combo show of Art and Science: Roger Guillemin & Le Corbeau opening on May 25 and the SDSU Scholarship show opens May 11.

On a personal note:

I hope to see many of you at the opening for the 2011 Art Prize recipients at the Athenaeum this Friday, March 30.

A great friend of SDVAN will be opening her show Sandra Chansi L 12 +12: the Message in the Space at the Solana Beach City Hall Gallery from April 1 to May 15 with a reception for the artist on Wed. April 11 from 5:30 to 7:30. More info: Anita Edman 858.720.2454. I am lookin forward to seeing her latest mainly stone sculptures with a selections of watercolors.

I am on a panel at Studio C Contemporary on April 13 at 5.30 pm ( 140 E. Main St., El Cajon, CA 92020). Artists, journalists, writers, university professors, critics, and business people will discuss the role the arts play in bettering East County and its diverse population. The panel will be mediated by Justin Hudnall, creator and leading operative of The Far East Movement.

  • New Our home page banner is in support of: Dennis Paul Batt 1952-2012. Memorial at Oceanside Museum of Art, Sat. Feb 25, 4:30-7 pm Artists are invited to bring a “Dennis related” work on paper no larger than 12": by 14" or miniature sculpture to be documented for the family. Materials will be available to create 2-D works at the event ( 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054). For info: info@sdvisualarts.net 760 943 0148. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Synergy Art Foundation and will be distributed to charities that Dennis supported. SDVAN is honored to have helped the family produce this memorial to celebrate his life.

SDVAN produced the show which feature hats created by artists to honor and celebrate the lives of some of the residents of Fairwinds Ivey Ranch . The show continues until May 18. Video for DNA of Creativiy If you missed the Information Meeting at MiraCosta College you can now watch the video which answers questions about the application process and explains the criteria for the $2000 grants. This project will connect artists to scientists and culminate in 2013 with large teams efforts producing exhibitions, lesson plans and other documentation of the collaborative process. On a personal note: I predict in 2012 little parties are the future of our social life. Large noisy gatherings will become passé as we all decide to listen to each other instead of the roar of the crowd. Yes, I will be at the Hats Off to Life reception but look for me in a quiet corner.

  • We are so grateful for donations made to San Diego Visual Arts Network/Synergy Art Foundation/San Diego Synergy Arts Network through Give Big San Diego and to the SD Foundation. for matching these funds $.13 to the dollar. We raised over $900 to support the projects of SDVAN.

On a personal note: I hope this finds you all full of the good things in life, food, booze and the kindness of the season.Our Hats off to Life fashion show is Sat Jan 14 and then you can swing by the La Jolla Art Walk that same night Sat Jan 14. I shall look forward to seeing many of you at our DNA of Creativity meeting on Wednes. Jan 18 and to make it easy to remember our monthly meeting is Sat. Feb18. It is still the season to be jolly….fa la la along with me!
