  • New Our great thanks to those of you who made donation this last month. ($250) Offield Family Trust for Lemon Grove Historical Society. We collected $121 from the donation jar at the A Moment in Time with drinks and food donated by Art San Diego arranged by Ann Berchtold. We are 100% volunteer organization and no salaries are paid, so your donations help support all we do.

Join us for the Art San Diego after party: Electric Signal
  from 8 to 11 pm at San Diego Art Institute (1439 El Prado, San Diego 92101) $5 admission. Artists Lana Z. Caplan, Tiffany Carbonneau, and Shannon Willis will have video work that responds to their outdoor installations at Art San Diego. See SDAI’s current exhibition Women’s Work: Masculinity and Gender in Contemporary Fiber Art. DJs Ana A. Brown and La Bucky and L.A. Witch (performing at 9:30pm). A complimentary shuttle will drive visitors between Art San Diego and San Diego Art Institute starting at 8pm.

  • New Funding For The Arts Month @ SDAI is an amazing opportunity to meet all sorts of specialist and network with collectors and art professionals. There are nine events and I am involved in the first one on Oct 5 where the entire series is introduced and the third one on Oct 8 where we will be discussing how to look and talk about art. These are large billboards (a bit larger than 10 by 22 feet) scattered through the city. The Open Walls is made possible by the presenting sponsors Art San Diego Contemporary Art Show and CBS Outdoor.. We are especially looking forward to the billboard in honor of Ernest Silva.

  • New Our banner is in support of the San Diego Visual Arts Network participation booth FARM Creative Market and Art School Art Mural at the 10th Annual ArtWalk at NTC from August 1 5 – 16, 10 AM to 6 PM at Ingram Plaza at NTC Liberty Station. In preparation for FARM Creative Market & Art School's grand opening, ArtWalk attendees are invited to participate in an exciting collaborative mural creation using their own imagination and an assortment of art materials.  Those that join in on the fun will enjoy promotions, including giveaways, discounts and a chance to win a $100 Apple gift card.  Participants will also get a VIP invitation to a showcase party where the finished murals will be displayed and prizes awarded. On a personal note: Of course I will be going to the New Contemporaries VIII at Valencia Gallery (Barracks 16, Suite 10,1 2730 Historic Decatur Rd., SD 92106) for the closing reception, Fri. May 29 from 5 to 7 pm. And that same night I will head up to Ship in the Woods( 1660 Lugano Lane, Del Mar 92014) to see the de la Torres brothers and Belize Iristay in a show called Conquest | Control | Confinement. The Artist Odyssey Kickstarter Launch is April 21. They need our support to reach their goals to supply documentation for artist and are starting with a strong local program. They have a new production space in Encinitas and are supporting a number of artist who they will document as they create installations.

On April 24-26, The San Diego Museum of Art will be transformed by more than 100 floral designers bringing the Museum’s Permanent Collection to life during the 34th annual  Art Alive .   New this year, FIDM will be creating several fashion interpretations of works of art, and artist Chor Boogie will provide special installation artwork for the Bloom Bash kick off party on Friday 4/24.

I am one of the artists in MAS Attack 8 - 75 LA Artist Meet 75 SD Artist for this one night event on Sat Feb 28 from 6 to 10 pm at the San Diego Art Institute (1439 El Prado, Balboa Park, House of Charm, SD 92101). There will be live music by Angel Dust and Prayers and DJ Nick Grey. All 150 artists will be present for the MAS (Mutual Admiration Society) event started by Artra Curatorial. No works are for sale, but artists are encouraged to barter work. The public is welcome. This will be one wild night! More info: Marina Grize 619.236.001

  • New   Our banner is in support of the Sugar Museum Jars Exhibit, a crowd-sourced Art Installation and a collaborative fundraiser for Sugar Museum &  Art Produce which run from Jan. 10 thru Feb 20, 2015 at Art Produce. This is an installation of hundreds of jars of art by local artists and jars of food donated by local vendors will be displayed on shelving with“art” and “food art” coexisting. The second reception is on Valentine's day includes a chocolate and wine/beer tasting. Remember the space is only open Thur to Sat from 1 to 5 pm. More info Terri Hughes  619.277.0132 

  • New Thanks to all of our 2014 Supporters list. Because of you we will be making several upgrades to the SDVAN website. As a special gift to all those who list events on our site, our wonderful software designer Anand Bora from Determinant Studios  in Bangalor, India  has added the first of many improvements to the site. You can now add images to your events listing directly from your own computer easily. There is no longer a need to have the image online or enter any code. Try it out next time you enter an event. With the addition of an image, your event will be more eye catching and our site more delightful to use.   • New San Diego Visual Arts Network is honored to announce a partnership with The Artist Odyssey  to produce interviews and documentation of the SD Art Prize winners. The Artist Odyssey is a project headed by the local San Diego Artrepreneur Chris Fessenden as a global arts network. They intend to deliver premium arts television and support arts education with a series of artist interviews with photographers, filmmakers, musicians, visual, and performing artists. They will be charging $5/month or $50/year for unlimited access to their archive of premium, commercial-free arts entertainment, streamed on-demand to your devices. Watch for their Kickstarter campaign.

  • New SmArt CollectorFive Misconceptions of Art Collecting was kindly compiled for us by artists fromAdelman Fine Art, which will be opening soon in Little Italy.

I Can Feel your Smile: Tracy Ermin

I have chosen this older neon work by Tracy Ermin to send special holiday greetings to each of you. I find myself secretly smiling when I think of all we have achieved together and how bright the future is for the arts in the San Diego region. We hope your holiday season is filled with joyous surprises. Our best wishes for a terrific New Year.

    There are a few more days to make your end of year donations which are fully tax deductible. You can join that list which is up for a full year. Please remember that SDVAN is a 100% volunteer organization with no bricks and mortar overheads and so all your donations go to our programming and website needs. We also remind you that money given to SDVAN is money given to help the visual arts in the entire region of San Diego prosper and be recognized as a vibrant and creative resource. Please consider becoming more involved with SDVAN by giving of your time, expertise, and with your donations. Those of you who can give $25 of more will be listed on the permanent sponsor page. North County Arts Network
(NCAN) will be meeting on Thurs, Jan15, 5-7 pm at the new School of Arts at Cal State University, San Marcos (333 South Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos, 92078). This event kicks off a slate of on-going quarterly events aimed at uniting and building collaborations between arts organizations and leaders in North County and beyond. The Keynote Speaker is Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council and the honorary hosts for the series are District 5 County Supervisor Bill Horn and District 3 County Supervisor Dave Roberts.  Jacquelyn Kilpatrick, Founding Director of the new School of Arts at CSUSM will be the NCAN launch event host. All are invited but r eservations are required and seats are limited. sofaevents@csusm.edu or 760-750-4324. Mark your calendar for April 116, July 16 and Oct 15 for future events this year held in CA Center for the Arts Escondido, Lux Art Institute and Oceanside Museum of Art. Daniel Foster is spearheading this new organization with help from Jim Gilliam, Patricia Frischer, Naomi Nussbaum, Marilyn Huerta, Jacquelyn Kilpatrick, Jerry Van Leeuwen, Reesey Shaw, Vincent Kitch, and Jerry Kern.

Sugar Museum Jars Exhibit is a crowd-sourced Art Installation and a collaborative fundraiser for Sugar Museum &  Art Produce which run from Jan. 10 thru Feb 20, 2015 at Art Produce. This is an installation of hundreds of jars of art by local artists and jars of food donated by local vendors will be displayed on shelving with“art” and “food art” coexisting. They are both beautiful commodities in this situation. Will the buyer put the art in their cupboard next to the honey or frame the honey on the living room wall? All the work will be for sale throughout the exhibit. There are two receptions. Sat Jan 10 and Sat Feb 14 from 6-9 pm. The second one on Valentines day includes a chocolate and wine/beer tasting.
