After the election results, we have to say that more than ever we need a way to pull the community together and art has enormous power to do just that. The arts are fabulous because they are diverse and because art is a great way to show respect to all people. Being inclusive and transparent are cornerstones of San Diego Visual Arts Network. Dear SDVAN Visitors, Art Resources and Artists,
We are packed with new information in this monthly message and so very THANKFUL for our devoted readers and for all the wonderful visual arts events and resources in our county
- New Our banner this month is in support of San Diego Visual Arts Network’s sponsorship of INTO THE LIGHT/ San Diego Art Prize 2016 in collaboration with San Diego Art Institute and curated by the San Diego Mesa CollageMuseum Studies Program at Art San Diego Contemporary Art Show from Nov 3-6. This triple booth will focus on the outstanding works of the two emerging 2016 SD Art Prize winners William Feeney and Shinpei Takeda. It will also feature artwork by San Diego Art Institute members who have been past years nominees for the San Diego Art Prize New Contemporaries. It will highlight artists that have made the transition from their studios to solid representation in the San Diego art scene. There will be an exciting range of affordable work geared to young art collectors that want to support local artists. The collaboration between these organizations is rooted in our mutual interests to promote artists, exhibit their works, and network with the San Diego community. San Diego Mesa Collage Museum Studies students will be curating the exhibit, managing the booth and focusing on outreach during the art fair. Past New Contemporary Artists include: Claudia Cano, Andrea Chung, Beliz Iristay, Margaret Noble, Sasha Koozel Reibstein Bhavna Mehta, PANCA, Lee Puffer, Aren Skalman, Anna Stump and Joe Yorty.
- New The San Diego Visual Arts Network is delighted to announce the established artists recipients of the San Diego Art Prize 2016 The established artist Irma Sofia Poeter with emerging artist Shinpei Takeda , and established artist Richard Keely with emerging artist William Feeney will being showing at Athenaeum Music & Arts Library from May 13 to June 10, 2017. with a reception on Friday, May 12, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Art Notes by Melinda Chiment, executive director, The AJA Project, Norma Iglesias-Prieto, Professor at San Diego State University and Researcher at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte , Jim Ruland, writer, Neil Kendricks, artist and filmmaker are available in the 2016 SD Art Prize Catalog.

PS. City Beat is running a best of contest for Museums and the final two are SD Museum of Art and the San Diego Art Institute. Make up your mind but remember SDAI is presenting lots of SD Art Prize artists so it is a no brainer for us.

In partnership with the City of Encinitas Arts Division, Encinitas Friends of the Arts will be celebrating its third annual Dia de la Muertos on Sat. Oct 29, at the Encinitas Community Center ( 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, off Balour, Encinitas) from 12-4 pm. This free family event will foster an appreciation and awareness of this significant Latino cultural celebration while uniting people of all backgrounds and traditions. Sergott Contemporary Art Alliance (SCAA) (Rancho Santa Fe) celebrates the beginning of Five Years with an Anniversary Exhibition from Sept 9 to Nov 9. To commemorate this occasion, the exhibition features a selection of new works by sixteen artists who have exhibited at SCAA as well as two new artists. Erin Dace Behling and Robert Michael Jones both New Contemporaries for 2016. Other SD Art Prize artists include: De La Torre Brothers, Belize Iristay, Jeffrey Laudenslager, and Deanne Sabeck. - New Our banner this month is in support of Sidney Wildesmith: Wonderlust and TRANSDIMENSIONAL which begins July 26 and runs to Oct 4. There is an opening reception on Sat.Aug 13, 6-8 pm. This is a retrospective of Widesmith who was an Artist in Residence in 7 National Parks. This is also a tribute to the National Parks 100th anniversary. At the opening and for night only TRANSDIMENSIONAL is the premiere of artwork exceeding 3-dimensions.

The next NCAN quarterly program themed Arts Education in San Diego is on Wedn. May 11. Networking is at the Muramid Museum and Art Center (212-F Artist Alley) from 5:00 - 6:00 pm and the formal meeting at Sunshine Brooks Theater (217 N Coast Hwy), operated by the Oceanside Theatre Company at 6:00 pm. The program is presented by NCAN's Arts Education Committee led by Leah Goodwin (CCAE) and Lynnette Tessitore-Lopez (City of Chula Vista Arts), with additional support of Jacque Kilpatrick (CSUSM). This arts education program will feature some of San Diego's most knowledgeable and impactful arts educators and administrators discussing the opportunities and challenges for strengthening youth arts education. - Remember The San Diego Art Institute and Mission Federal ArtWalk together with San Diego Visual Arts Network are pleased to offer “The Business of Art” college student scholarship for the 32th Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk event in Little Italy, happening on April 30th and May 1st, 2016. The Mentorship will be awarded to one student who has a body of work to be shown and sold at ArtWalk. This scholarship and mentoring program will also receive media sponsorship from the San Diego Visual Arts Network. The scholarship is open to art students ages 30 and under who are currently enrolled in a college or university in San Diego County. Daniel Foster: Inside Out is the launch of his artist career at Susan Street Fine Art Gallery (200 North Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach, 92075) from Feb 8 -12 by appointment. Foster was the former director of the Oceanside Museum of Art, Riverside Art Museum and Riverside Foundation. Many remember him as the education director at SDAI. His art has been hidden from view until now. In January 1986, upon a visit to Spectrum Gallery in San Diego's Gaslamp District, Foster was deeply inspired by a Walter Wojtyla’s Stalker Dog series prismacolor drawing. He immediately purchased a box of colored pencils and has been making art ever since. His work will be revealed for the first time at this exhibition and celebrated at a reception: Fri., Feb.12, 5-9 pm and an Artists Talk: Sat, Feb. 13, 4-6 pm. The San Diego Exploratory Foundation (SDEF) announced the launch of a logo design and brand/style guide competition for the inaugural ANOC (Association of National Olympic Committees) World Beach Games, taking place in San Diego, in 2017. The deadline to submit is January 29 and the winning logo will be announced on February 1st. This is an open and competitive process for all qualified freelance graphic designers and design firms/agencies within the county of San Diego. The selected design will receive $5,000 compensation.
