**Opening night: Saturday, February 20, 2010.**
Playwrights Project's "Plays by Young Writers" began twenty-five years ago at the now defunct Gaslamp Quarter Theater. The festival returns to downtown for the 25th Anniversary season which will feature the teenage winners of the California Young Playwrights Contest. These young playwrights voice their views of the world with a variety of theatrical styles, including a whimsical comedy, a thought-provoking drama, and a daring exploration of modern teenage girls. Their characters will take center stage at the Lyceum Theatre, February 20-28, 2010. Selected from 242 submissions by teenagers statewide, 3 works will receive full professional productions featuring costumes, elaborate set designs, and special lighting to help bring the stories to life. In addition, 3 submissions will receive readings in this highly regarded festival of new voices. |

| Event Description |
Join professional artist, Sean Sullivan as she guides you through the process of portrait painting and the art of glazing techniques. Sean will provide each student with a prepared 8x10 panel of a historical figure from which students will begin to develop into a masterful portrait. The focus will be on Sean’s one-of-a kind glazing techniques and her secret to the seductive glow. Students will study how to build up the paint surface through various paint methods. After the first day, where the panels are provided and Sean will guide students through an instruction on techniques, students can continue to work on their portraits individually. The following Saturday, Feb 27th, students will put the finishing touches on their portraits and have time to work on individual projects, which Sean will give expert advice on. Sean will share her masterful approach as well as her insights in how to think as a painter through individual and group instruction. Students will gain valuable experiences as they learn Sean’s portrait painting secrets which she has crafted through out her years as a professional artist. |

John Thurston
With today's more sophisticated and inexpensive point and shoot digital cameras, it actually may be the children who are the experts in their use. These workshops will cover basic camera functions, but will also encourage that special element every child seems to have an abundance of – the desire to experiment. Maybe Mom and Dad will catch on too! Photo fundamentals, light, composition, people and places, subjects and exposure will be defined. Please bring a digital point and shoot camera, it's manual and a spare battery. After taking this class, your holidays and vacations photos will be a source of pride. Suggested Reference materials: The Digital Photography Books Vol. 1, 2 & 3 by Scot Kelby are great resources for all digital photographers. |

| Event Description |
an exhibition of 104 photographs by one of the 20th century’s most influential photographers. This series of pictures made by Kertész in Hungary, France, and the United States over a 50-year period illustrates his penchant for the poetry and choreography of life in both public and private moments, tapping the absorptive power of reading as a universal pleasure. Sturdily balanced between geometric composition and playful observation, these glimpses of everyday people and places would come to heavily influence photography as an art form. |
