Event Description

During the early modern period (about 1500 to 1800), the Spanish empire spanned the globe; from Italy and the Netherlands to the Americas and Asia. The royal court employed many of the greatest artists of the day. The The San Diego Museum of Art's Permanent Collection includes several of the finest examples of Spanish portraiture in the United States, including works by Sofonisba Anguissola, Anton Rafael Mengs, and Francisco Goya. During this lecture, Dr. Michael Brown, Associate Curator of European Art, will discuss the artistic and imperial context of these portraits, and take a broader look at the development of portrait painting from the Renaissance to Impressionism. This is the fourth lecture of the 2015 Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series. Happening on third Fridays monthly, each lecture focuses on works on view and is followed by a docent-led tour.

Event Description

The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) is pleased to present its winter group exhibition opening in Balboa Park on Friday,December 19 from 6pm-8pm. This exhibition will include solo shows by local artists Andrea Chung (SDAI�s current Artist-in-Residence), Elena Lomakin and Joyce Corum, as well as a group exhibition featuring San Diego artists such as Wick Alexander, Arzu Ozkal, Paul Turounet, Jaclyn Rose, Cooper Baker, Christopher Puzio, and Jessica McCambly. Additionally, Tijuana-based street artist PANCA will debut her large-scale mural in the entryway of SDAI, leading into the exhibition space. This mural will be on display through March 30, 2015.
