Event Description On the occasion of the exhibition Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui, which will be on view at our downtown campus, the Museum of Contemporary Art and The San Diego Museum of Art invite you to the 15th annual Axline Lecture to celebrate the magnificent work of El Anatsui. El Anatsui is an internationally renowned artist best known for transforming simple materials into complex assemblages that create distinctive visual impact. Roberta Smith of The New York Times writes “…the works evoke lace but also chain mail; quilts but also animal hides; garments but also mosaic, not to mention the rich ceremonial cloths of numerous cultures. Their drapes and folds have a voluptuous sculptural presence, but also an undeniably glamorous bravado.” This event honors Jackie and Rea Axline, whose generosity and philanthropic leadership inspired endowments to both museums in 1999.

Event Description The University Art Gallery at UC San Diego is pleased to present State Park, on view from March 7 through May 1, 2015, with an opening reception on March 7 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A dynamic group of artists explore the concept of state parks as complex sites that exist, ostensibly, to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic relevance, and recreational potential. State parks have also functioned as templates to examine how the U.S. thinks of, envisions, and exploits the outside. This exhibition unpacks state parks as sites rich with conflict and complexities---where landscape, myth, identity, class, exclusivity, exploitation, wildness, tragedy, erasure, memory, leisure, spirit, holism, play, and adventure exert their individual and collective forces. The artists included in the exhibition turn over the show's namesake so that we might see what they've seen, done, and remember, or discover who has been excluded and what's been inadvertently missed.

Event Description “The most basic element in an artist’s toolbox is imagination,” says Ruth Jameson. Over twenty years ago, OMA was a “vision” of a possibility in the imaginative minds of only a few individuals. One of those individuals was Ruth Jameson, a local Oceanside artist and visionary. OMA is pleased to present two perspectives on the artistic and creative talents of Ruth Jameson across two gallery spaces, one of Oceanside’s most influential artists over the past few decades. In the Parker Gallery, Visions: 20/20 and Beyond explores the concepts, projects, and visions that Jameson has been developing to influence the civic identity, character, and urban design in a local context such as Oceanside, California. This exhibition supports the museum’s priority of partnering with the city of Oceanside and civic community on the revitalization and development of Oceanside’s downtown and civic identity.
