Event Description Over a decade ago, a SoCal native, Bob Self, with a love of the outrageous and a flair for the theatrical founded an independent book publishing company with the dream of creating a path for daredevil artists to share their work with fans of the unusual. Oceanside Museum of Art is pleased to present a first-of-its-kind exhibition of art and artifacts showcasing Baby Tattoo Book’s evolution from a small publishing house to a counter-culture big-top. Numerous artists, from amateurs to provocative up-and-comers to legendary masters have been part of the Baby Tattoo story. Countless works of art, utilizing all manner of media, have been created and shared. A library of books has been published and distributed throughout the world. Historic events, where imaginative thrill-seekers congregate and celebrate, have been produced to connect people through art and entertainment.

Event Description Abstract art is often an image or composition in which color, line, form, and texture may exist as fully independent subject matter, rather than literally depicting aspects of the natural world. From the late 1940s through the 1960s, abstraction became vital to the work of many highly regarded San Diego artists. At no time was this approach more controversial in the region, more charged with excitement and possibility, than during the mid-twentieth century. As a starting point, In the Abstract recognizes the commitment of regional modernist pioneers such as painters Fred Hocks and Ed Garman, experimental photographer Lynn Fayman, and Harry Bertoia, the renowned sculptor, printmaker, and designer. Following these frontrunners, the exhibition pays special attention to a wave of youthful artists who came to regional prominence during the late 1950s and were, at least for a time, profoundly influenced by Abstract Expressionism.

Stump grew up in Chula Vista and has raised her own children in the South Bay. She has a complex relationship to Border culture, a jangling mixture of jealousy, admiration, and otherness. She was raised to both fear Tijuana and honor Mexican culture, pale in her own Mid-Western, Protestant roots. Stump uses imagery of piñatas, marble busts, drones, and golden eagles to represent the envy, unease, and irony of Border living. She will host a “Think Tank” in the gallery to discuss ideas of culture in the South Bay.
