Event Description Karla Diaz, artist Karla Diaz is a teacher, writer, and artist born in East Los Angeles and raised in both Mexico and Los Angeles. She received an MFA from CalArts School of Critical Studies. She has read her work and exhibited projects in venues locally in Southern California including the Getty Art Museum, MOCA, REDCAT, the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, as well at national and international venues such as the Museo Cervantez in Madrid, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Boston, the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, the Serpentine Gallery in London, and at the Zocalo in Mexico City. She writes for several art magazines including FlashArt, Beautiful Decay and the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. She is a founding member of Slanguage, an artist collective located in the harbor area of Los Angeles, where she began an educational program for teens. From 2006-2008 she ran programming and exhibitions at the New Chinatown Barbershop gallery. She lives and works in Los Angeles.

The paintings highlight the tension in an ideologically fractured America and address and reflect the issues that divide us - immigration, energy, foreign policy, race, the economy, class, religion, education, the environment, taxes, welfare, social security, health care, climate change and war.
