Event Description The tools of Japanese lacquer makers are implements of prolonged use and objects of remarkable beauty. These humble, functional boards, bowls, buckets, shelves and drawers were used to produce lacquered objects and in the process became aesthetic objects in themselves. In their myriad colorful drips and accumulated layers of viscous texture, they record the countless objects created from them. These hybrid articles tell us as much about the relationship of craftsmen to their tools as they do about Japanese lacquer making.

Event Description Tools and utensils have extended our arms, hands and feet since the beginning of time. Devices used in the workshop and home continue to occupy imaginative designers in an ongoing quest to improve the ease and comfort with which we carry out all manner of tasks. This exhibition presents such artful objects of daily use from cultures across the globe. Most are hand-made, traditional forms; but there is also a selection of machine-made and contemporary objects—all good to handle, effective in use, satisfying to the eye and enjoyable to have around. This is true mingei—art of the world and art of the people.

Event Description A fun afternoon designing and creating a one-of-a-kind scarf. Meld two different materials into one, as you create stunning, wearable, fashion art. The process is a combination of wet felt over a colorful silk background. The name is derived from the Japanese word “nuno” meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fibre, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. An ideal holiday gift for a loved one, or yourself. The technique is simple and and the results are stunning. Your creative juices will be flowing! Reserve your space now. Limited space for 6 students only!
