Event Description Learn how to recycle plant trimmings and transform them into beautiful baskets! This class is taught by award winning basket artist Nadine Spier. You will learn how to coil a basket around an unusual stone center and to weave so your stitches line up on both sides of the basket. The instructor has developed a technique of weaving around stones and other ornate objects. You will later find yourself looking for fun things such as brooches or pendants to use as centers for future baskets. You will be provided with flexible pine needles and Irish waxed linen thread, but your new skills can later be used to weave many common plants such as Dusty Miller, Lavender, Rosemary, and Jacaranda. Basket weaving is a wonderful way to channel away stress. Class size limited. This popular instructor’s classes fill up quickly – early enrollment is suggested.

Event Description David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre "Treyf: My Life as an Unorthodox Outlaw" by Elissa Altman Yes, the James Beard Award winning author Elissa Altman has transgressed: she has eaten pork ribs, shrimp in lobster sauce, and many other foods known as “treyf,” as they do not satisfy the conditions of Jewish law. In her taste bud-tantalizing memoir, she explores both her “forbidden foods” history and her colorful family while detailing growing up in the culinary kingdom of Queens, NY in the 1970s, a time when cultures clashed, cuisines collided, and Old World tastes and traditions began to make way for the new. Event Description David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre "The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows Are Built" by Jack Viertel If you’re a fan of musicals, this event is a must. Broadway legend Jack Viertel was the driving force behind more than fifty plays, including Hairspray and Angels in America. In his new book, he sings the praises of the American musical, an art form about “the outsize romance that can’t be controlled, the special world we’d love to live in for a while, the faraway time and place we’re waiting to be seduced by, the larger-than-life force of nature we so rarely encounter in real life.” Tickets: $22 Book: $28 For tickets visit: http://www.sdjbf.org or call: 858-362-1348

Event Description David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre "The Ghost Warriors" by Samuel M. Katz Terror and tragedy appear to be on the rise these days. But there’s always someone fighting back. Learn about the Ya’mas, an Israeli special forces group created to combat the Palestinian suicide attackers who terrorized Israel between 2000 and 2008. In The Ghost Warriors, Middle East security expert Samuel Katz gives us an “action packed [book]… refreshingly full of sound research rather than polemic” (Kirkus) on the largely unsung counterterrorist team that went undercover and successfully degraded and destroyed a key terrorist group.
