Event Description The beginner level of the Historical Binding Sampler is the perfect way to experiment with multiple sewing styles in a single day. By sewing directly onto pre-marked heavyweight cardstock, we’ll explore a range of historical binding styles including single section unsupported sewings (tacket, blanket, overcast, lace) and multi-section supported sewings (link, loop, lap, pearl) on leather, tapes, and cords. Sewing cards are a forgiving way to learn and are a fantastic resource for deconstructing stitching as the front and back of each sewing style remains visible after the cards are completed. Anne Covell, a book artist and papermaker, received her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. She has studied Asian and Western papermaking techniques and has taught courses in bookbinding, papermaking, and natural dyeing for the University of Iowa Center for the Book and the University of Georgia study-abroad program in Cortona, Italy.
