Event Description The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is pleased to announce An Introduction to Francis Bacon, a series of art history lectures presented by Hugh Davies, director emeritus of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. On May 25, the subject will be “Francis Bacon: Paintings from 1945-1973” and on June 29, “Francis Bacon: the Late Work.” Hugh Davies, a long-time Bacon scholar, currently serves as one of the five members of the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee, which published his catalogue raisonné in 2016. Note: If you previously attended the April 13 lecture introducing the art of Francis Bacon and had purchased tickets for the series (originally planned for just 2 lectures), please contact the library to find out how to incorporate the third lecture.

Event Description La Bodega Gallery presents PALABRA an evening of poetry hosted by Ted Washington Thursday May 25th Lizzie Wann will be our featured reader. Lizzie was an integral part of the development of the San Diego poetry scene in the early 2000s. She helped bring the poetry slam to the city, created her own readings, and produced original shows that featured poets and musicians. She has hosted readings at venues across the city including Java Joe’s, Urban Grind, Claire de Lune, and the Grassroots Oasis. She also founded and hosted the Meeting Grace house concert series that ran from 2000-2008. Her work appears on CDs (A Wing & A Prayer and A New Leaf), in chapbooks including Familiars, Naked Wrists, and Complicated Skies and in anthologies including Comstock Review, Incidental Buildings & Accidental Beauty, A Year in Ink, volume 2, So Luminous the Wildflowers, and The San Diego Poetry Annual. After Lizzie's reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read.
