"These examples of my ongoing series of carton, crate, and container illustrations are based on the concept of hyperreality, as introduced in 1981 by philosopher and sociologist, Jean Baudrillard. Hyperreality, in semiotics and postmodernism, is an inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality, especially in technologically advanced postmodern societies.[1] Hyperreality is seen as a condition in which what is real and what is fiction are seamlessly blended together so that there is no clear distinction between where one ends and the other begins.[2]
By presenting physical material alongside representation of material, and physical space concurrently with illusion of space in compelling and playful ways, I've designed these pieces to challenge the viewer to re-examine first impressions and consider perception as an ongoing process: to be open to new and conflicting information, dynamic context, and multiple perspectives." - Ralph Webb |
