Ever since I heard my father talking about Meyer Lansky and the Hotel Nacional in Havana, Cuba, I have wanted to go there. Soaring Crow wants to go for the music because he is exclusively devoted to Salsa and Afro-Cuban beat. Last week, at Galerie D’ Art International’s opening reception of “Flight into Cuba and the Caribbean,” SC and I were transported to Havana. I could have smoked a cigar and no one would have wagged their finger in my face. It was that kind of pre-perfect, healthy living kind of party. I stayed past the closing time. On the patio, we were enraptured with saucy red-hot rhythms of Corazon y Candela. One of the guests was so enflamed with the fire, she performed a solo that charcoaled the men’s eyes and raised the women’s brows. The exhibit is a direct flight into the strangulation of artists that are too poor to paint. Don’t ask me how, but Filippo has brought their work into what I’ve coined Solana Beach’s Salon on Art & Culture. He is the Wizard of Art and hops between Tijuana, the Caribbean and Italy directing opera concerts, educational seminars and culture in his Solana Beach gallery. The gallery’s two floors are filled with quixotic old Havana, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. SC and I were upstairs drooling over a black-and-white photograph of Castro and the Pope in heated argument, and before I knew it, the piece was sold. A world beyond my reach by United or American Airlines is hanging on the walls of the gallery. There are six artists representing a mixture of photography, colorgraphy, mixed-media, Encaustic, and oil and ink. The artists range in age from 25 to 55 years old. The most collectible artist by critic’s standards is Sacha Tebo. I met his daughter at the opening. She captured the spotlight for her father, who passed away last year. Of the 50 paintings left in his trust, the gallery has 10. This, too is a must-see exhibit.

The Galerie and the San Diego Visual Arts Network are presenting two interactive seminars: “Arouse Yourself with Art” and “Collecting Secrets Revealed.” The events begin at 7 p.m. with cocktails and entertainment. The dates are Aug. 10 and 17. You’ll find all the information on the Website at www.galerieartint.com. or by stopping by 320 S. Cedros Ave. in the alley next to Coles Carpets.
