Event Description The fall series concludes on Friday, December 5, with Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O. Described as “An ambassador of good feeling” (New York Times), drummer Matt Wilson is one of the most in-demand musicians in jazz. He presents this joyous trio project celebrating the holiday season with his own characteristically humorous and at times eccentric sendups of holiday classics. The band, now in its 25th year, features sax virtuoso Jeff Lederer and bassist Paul Sikivie. Wilson’s greatest gift is his knack for invention and the unbridled sense of fun he brings to the bandstand—a perfect combination for the holiday season. As The New York Times remarked, “Wonder and innocence, gaudiness and cheer: can it be any surprise that the jazz drummer Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays?” Wilson’s last Athenaeum appearance was in 2020 with his Honey & Salt quintet celebrating the work of American poet Carl Sandburg.

Event Description San Diego’s favorite art duo Brian & Ryan return with the third edition of their irreverent, glitter-drenched holiday variety show, It’s Kitschmastime Again! Expect a rollicking evening of festive music, offbeat storytelling, absurd theatricality, and lovingly over-the-top seasonal cheer. The Pageant runs alongside Brian & Ryan’s 10th annual Kitschmas exhibition—a maximalist explosion of all things fantastically plastic, wonderful, and weird about the holidays. Whether you’re a true tinsel-lover or a holiday skeptic, Brian & Ryan will send you home grinning and ready to deck the halls with reckless abandon.

Event Description “Customizing toys opened the door for me to keep growing as an artist and explore new mediums. It also introduced me to an incredible community of creators who share the same passion for crafting unique art. I am excited to bring everyone together for a show that celebrates that creativity and connection.” — Zard Apuya Why It Matters to the Community: The toy art scene continues to grow worldwide, and exhibitions like The Toy Shop help bring visibility to artists who blend craftsmanship, storytelling, and pop culture in inspiring ways. The show encourages visitors to discover a vibrant community that values creativity, collaboration, and the joy of making things by hand. It also gives aspiring artists, including youth and first-time creators, a chance to see that toy art is a space where anyone can experiment, learn, and find their artistic voice.
