If you hadn’t noticed, dragons are very “in” at the moment. If you are not a fan of Game of Thrones, or perhaps a participant in Dungeons and Dragons, you may be involved in helping your children or grandchildren learn how to train their dragons. We are surrounded by dragons today, proof of their ongoing universal fascination. Dragons have always existed in all parts of the world, and are a type of inherited imagery from our earliest ancestors. While they may originate from a primordial archetypal image that varies regionally, the existence of dragons has been tied to a cultural, innate fear of predators, which has long been passed down in folklore. In Dragons, Myth and Reality”, Courtenay McGowan, Asian art collector and longtime member of the Asian Arts Committee at SDMA will explore the history of dragons worldwide, and challenge us to question how these creatures of great mythological strength came to be. |
