Event Description Join Mingei International Museum at The New Children's Museum to celebrate Culture Day in Japan (known as "Bunka no Hi" in Japanese) with all things art and culture. Design your own wooden Japanese Daruma doll. Darumas in Japan are symbols of success, determination and overcoming adversity. The eyes of a Daruma are usually blank. After receiving one, the owner fills in one eye when setting a goal, starting a new venture or making a wish, then paints the other when it has been fulfilled. Workshop is free with Museum admission.

Event Description Each spring the Women’s Museum of California presents The Women’s Film Festival San Diego (WFFSD), a 3-day series showcasing the extraordinary talent of women filmmakers all over the world. This year, the entire series will be presented virtually. The 23 films screened at the Festival showcase a diverse spectrum of talent both on and off the screen. This allows audience members who aren’t usually represented in the film industry to finally be seen and heard on the big screen. Themes represented in the films include relevant and timely topics such as violence against women, women in health, coming of age, women in STEM, and humanitarianism/activism. WFFSD is an annual program for the benefit of the Women’s Museum of California.

Event Description Mesa College Drive-In: An Outdoor Art Exhibition will be on view from November 13 through December 9, 2020, in Parking Lot 1 and we will host a drive-thru reception on Friday, November 13, 1 – 4 pm. This is a visual time-capsule capturing the dramatic events of the last eight months—plague, social unrest and fires. This physically distant display, including thirty-six California artists, allows you to stay in your car and view the artwork as you drive along the perimeter of the parking lot. The artworks have been painted or printed onto 3 x 5 foot banners and attached onto the fence. Curated by the San Diego Mesa College Museum Studies class, the works on display ponder on the 2020 “new normal” by interrogating spaces—indoors and outdoors, public and private—as well as the virtual versus the physical. This year has been difficult for the art community and Mesa College is staying adaptable through this innovative presentation; this exhibition reimagines the possibilities of connection.
