Event Description A solo exhibition of new & past works by Teresa Watson. Born and raised in Texas, and educated at Pratt Institute, Teresa Watson is an illustrator and painter. Her comic "Welcome to the Covid-19 Mental Health Struggle" appeared in New York Times. She has exhibited paintings at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles and Hey There Projects, La Matadora Gallery, and Mincing Mockingbird in Joshua Tree California. Teresa has painted pet portraits for numerous artists. I try to find humor in life. Because of my struggles with mental health, my world has always been very chaotic and full of awkward moments. Painting things that don’t belong together makes me laugh, for example a man with a candle on his head, hallucinating looking in the trash while a frog sits nearby playing music. Dissimilar images juxtaposed together to create a safe space to process confusing moments or triggering events. Other times I enjoy painting light-hearted pictures of cowgirls with flowers or pet portraits.

Opening Days Exhibition open to the PUBLIC April 1. Special MEMBERS only week March 25-28. We will be open Thursday-Sundays.
Event Description “The pandemic motivated the artists to ponder on the vulnerability and the sacrifices made by families and the community. The cries of George Floyd for his mother provoked them to confront racial injustice. If the art registered women’s struggles, it also celebrated their power—whether as leaders and activists or as mothers and essential workers. The effects of climate change and political polarization also entered the visual conversation. The art also provided respite—a moment of meditation on beauty and form, an expression of resilience. The Twenty Women Artists collective embodies a diverse cross-section of Southern California—they represent different generations and ethnic backgrounds, some of them are immigrants, some are parents, and others are career women or have tackled the balance of being both. This exhibition is an expression of the strong sense of community and support forged around the group.”

I express the notions of identity, culture, ephemerality, and nature in my work. Every concept has an underlying relationship with one another which is a constant process and investigation. Through the experimentation of mixing various plant life representative of individuals and/or locations multi-cultural background, I aim to create the notion of hybridity from a post-colonial identity. While creating an atmosphere of identity through nature, I use a personal motif, “heart in a bowl” which symbolizes the effects of displacement, isolation, and anxiety. In conclusion, I create a dynamic atmosphere while providing dialogue surrounding perspectives of individuals and our society.” —Amanda Kachadoorian

I examine memories from my childhood to understand how my initial relationship to wood and rope, as materials, has warped over time as I learned about slavery and how these same materials were historically used to harm or instill fear. The assemblages use this historical trauma as a contact point for the two materials, addressing the violence and fear many people of color feel on a daily basis, but also showing the possibility of growth and creating a new relationship between myself and these charged materials, that is more like that of when I was a child.” —Kevin Vincent
