Saturday, January 22, 2022 9:00 am - 5:00 pm The creation of affirmation dolls is a process handed down from African-American slave mothers who practiced this tradition with their daughters as a way to preserve a sense of dignity, hope, and survival of spirit. This will be a day dedicated to our mothers, daughters and sisters and will be enriched if you can come with either one from your own family or someone who has been like a “mother”, “daughter” or “sister” to you. Through the use of yarn and cloth you will learn to create dolls which preserve the strength and dignity of life, countering the critical voices from the past; voices that have held us back from embracing our full creativity and self confidence.

Event Description

This workshop is led by Regional Artist Luciano Pimienta. Are you a college student interested in ceramics or the art of Luciano Pimienta? This workshop is for you! Through coil building ceramics, in a communal process, participants will help the artist build a sculptural chain-link fence while discussing the idea of boundaries, access to land, and the proximity to the border. This is a FREE workshop. Participants need to be currently enrolled in college or community college, 18 years +. Space is limited to 15 participants and spots will be secured first come first served.
