Hyde Art Gallery is thrilled to present a solo exhibition showcasing work from Tucson, AZ-based photographer, Anh-Thuy Nguyen, inside our main gallery space. Her exhibition Thuy & includes a series of still photographs, installations and videos that highlight the complex relationships and cultural conflicts resulting from her existing between two cultural identities - Vietnamese and American.
Created in 2010, “Thuy,” a semi-autobiographical character, was inspired by her yearning for home in Vietnam, which the artist could not visit due to her visa status. By turning the camera on herself, Anh-Thuy uses Thuy as a collaborator in the presented series of artworks, including Thuy & Rice, Boat Journey, Thuy & Sand, and Boat Journey, to gain perspective and explore those feelings. This lonely character ventures into the space between two cultures and discovers the conflict that arises from being stuck between the two. |
