Event Description The San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) are pleased to present internationally renowned sculptor Charles Ray as the featured speaker for the 13th annual Axline Lecture at MCASD La Jolla. Ray’s work is currently on view at MCASD as part of Lifelike. Combining a keen interest in materiality with an ethos of performance, Ray’s labor-intensive works serve as calculated meditations on perception and meaning. The Los Angeles-based artist is best known for his uncanny sculptures, which alter and refashion familiar objects, testing the viewer’s ability to discern between what seems to be and what is. Since 2000, The San Diego Museum of Art and MCASD have partnered to present the annual Axline Lecture (hosted on alternate years by each museum) in honor of Jackie and Rea Axline, long-time trustees and supporters of both museums who in 1999 bequeathed generous endowments to both institutions.

Event Description This workshop will explore effective community engagement, including how it differs from traditional marketing and audience engagement. A community engagement lens helps unify all aspects of an arts organization's work - programming, development, marketing, even governance - to provide the potential for greater success. The workshop will also explore how organizational functions can be re-imagined with a community engagement perspective and present examples of deep engagement in the work of arts organizations. Doug Borwick is one of the country's leading advocates for the arts and community engagement. He has led workshops in more than 10 states in the past six months, served as the keynote speaker at numerous conferences, and heads to China next month for an engagement celebrating the 10th anniversary of the China Conservatory of Music.
