Event Description Opening reception Friday June 6 for recent UCSD MFA graduate in painting John Singletary. His work draws from an Eastern European influence while dealing with his African American heritage in a fever dream mise en scene. Singletary is about to relocate to NYC to pursue his career, so this is a great send off and glimpse into the rising power of a UCSD MFA in Visual Arts. Oolong Gallery honors one MFA yearly and our last, sculptor Naomi Nadreau, followed the same direction heading to NY to assist for world famous artist Simone Leigh.

Event Description Special Guest Performance: Live Spoken Word by 2023-2024 San Diego Poet Laureate, Jason Magabo Perez DAYO, meaning immigrant/alien/stranger in Tagalog, is more than an art show—it is a journey. As a traveling exhibit, it stitches together the narratives of emerging and established Filipino artists, forming a collective tapestry of cultural presence and creative expression. Through painting, sculpture, mixed media, and film, DAYO invites viewers to immerse themselves in stories where faces are illuminated, identities are questioned, and traditions are reimagined. The artworks engage in conversations that transcend borders, challenging perceptions and inviting deeper reflection. Each piece fosters relationships between artists and audiences, shaping a more nuanced and authentic representation of Filipino identity. As DAYO travels across the global Filipino diaspora, it connects artists worldwide—whether they define, challenge, or break the stereotypes surrounding Filipino identity.
