Event Description Fun and fast paced, life drawing is a great way to be in the moment. Learn how to draw the human figure, hone your existing skills, and develop some new ones. This class is for all skill levels. Materials: Newsprint pad, 18” x 24”; soft vine charcoal; kneaded eraser. You are welcome to bring along any materials not on the list that you already have and would like to use. The instructor will provide some unusual art supplies with which to experiment. Event Description The series concludes on June 21 with the return of the Melissa Aldana Quartet, with Aldana on tenor sax, Fabian Almazan on piano, Pablo Menares on bass, and Kush Abadey on drums. Aldana’s last Athenaeum performance was in March 2020, when she played music from her album Visions for Frida Kahlo, which earned her a first-ever GRAMMY nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo. Her program this June will feature music from her 2024 release on Blue Note Records, Echoes of the Inner Prophet. A native of Chile, Aldana moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music. In 2013, at age 24, she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Her latest album explores a fascinating paradox. As Aldana explains, it reflects her “personal journey, with an especially introspective point of view.

Event Description Howard Koslow (Sept 21,1924 – Jan 25, 2016) In the pre-digital era, see how an illustrator sets the standard for visual design, translating concepts from sketches to final commercial graphics. Howard Koslow was a master at capturing topics and authentically portraying them in a painting or original work on paper. His artworks are an essential part of advertising history. Koslow studied art at Pratt Institute, NY, the Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI and the School of Visual Arts, NY. Early in his professional art career his illustrations covered diverse advertising campaigns, book covers, historical genre, sports art and travel posters. His art is in the permanent collections of NASA, the United States Air Force, The National Park Service, The United States Coast Guard and The Pentagon. Koslow’s projects for the U.S. Postal Service, artwork for postage stamps and first day cover envelopes, spanned 30 years. He is featured in a video at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, one of artists discussing the art of stamp design.
