Event Description LUIS DE JESUS SEMINAL PROJECTS is proud to present LAEL CORBIN: REMODEL, opening June 6 through July 5, 2008. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, June 6, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Lael Corbin is a recipient of the 2007-2008 San Diego Art Prize. For REMODEL, his first solo gallery exhibition, Corbin will produce a new site-specific installation that utilizes the entire gallery (all three exhibition spaces). REMODEL is the latest manifestation of Lael Corbin’s ongoing study of workspaces. Corbin has long been drawn to these spaces as they often provide a backdrop for exploration, discovery and contemplation. Within these spaces we often encounter unfamiliar objects and processes, forcing us to search for a framework by which to understand or quantify what is happening there. REMODEL specifically addresses Corbin’s own experiences and memories tied to residential and commercial construction, some of which extend far back into his early childhood. In this workspace, familiar manufacturing and building processes mix together with dream-like imagery, fragments of information, memory and competing timelines. Here, he explores a physical space in flux and its relationship to his own consciousness. Lael Corbin is a San Diego based artist. His work has taken the form of installation, individual sculptures and photography. Recent past exhibitions include “Select Mode” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, “OMA Regional 5” at the Oceanside Museum of Art, “San Diego Art Prize: New Contemporaries” at Simayspace, San Diego, “Research” (with Roman de Salvo) at L Street Fine Art, San Diego, and “Latitude” at Flor y Canton Gallery, San Diego State University. Lael Corbin received his MFA in sculpture from San Diego State University in 2007 and currently teaches at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Event Description Lux Art Institute welcomes Daniel Wheeler from June 6 through July 12, 2008 as he presents his new photographic body of work, GULP (Generative Urban Landscape Project), and work-in-progress, the Blindspot project. Visitors will “see art happen” as they observe Wheeler construct Blindspot and watch a video of Wheeler diving into pools to create the images seen in GULP. Debuting at Lux, the images from GULP represent the ubiquitous Southern California pool as the medium through which the surrounding landscape is interpreted. With scuba gear and his underwater camera, Wheeler dives into swimming pools and shoots the view overhead. The oversized photographs that result are taken looking up from the bottom of the water-filled pools at the greenery and sky above. “The peculiar garden that is urban Southern California would not exist without added water,” said Wheeler. “With my photography it’s viewed through that chlorinated lens." During his residency at Lux, Wheeler will be working on Blindspot – a set of photos of locations in Southern California. With a portable photographic tool that allows him to shoot 360 degree views of Lux’s four-acre site, Wheeler will produce a sculptural photographic column for exhibit while visitors look on. Constructed using paper, tape and wire, the column, which will be about 12 feet high and 40 inches across, will display images of the Lux landscape. A figure representing the viewer will be a “blindspot” in the foreground. For the last twenty years, Wheeler has produced installations, drawings, photographs, performances, and sculptures using the Los Angeles landscape as his muse. Once called a “free-form cultural anthropologist,” he is known for enticing viewers out of their learned response to the environment into a sensory encounter of it. Exhibited nationally and internationally, Wheeler’s work is included in private and public collections across the country. “Wheeler has discovered a view that’s unexplored, yet part of our lives,” said Lux Director, Reesey Shaw. “And like an artifact from an extinct civilization, he presents his discovery with the magic that accompanies a fresh surprise.” A Members Only reception for the artist will take place on Saturday, June 7 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Wheeler’s completed work will be on view at Lux through August 2, 2008.

For Centuries artists have depicted women in a variety of roles and statuses. As times change so do the styles of the multifaceted depictions, from idealistic to realistic to abstract to erotic. Up until the mid 20th century most images of women were painted by men; with the advent of the feminist movement many female artists emerged adding a new viewpoint to the art scene. Some popular themes are women engaged in domestic activities, motherhood, goddesses and women in the nude. The classic story of “Leda and the Swan”, a common inspiration for images of women in art, is illustrated by several pieces in this show. The influences of surrealism, ethnicity and realism are evident in the exhibition collection. Perry L. Meyer has been a private art dealer for 30 years, specializing in original graphics, limited edition prints, and other works on paper from the 17th century to contemporary works. Event Description The University Art Gallery is delighted to present its annual exhibition of work by the graduating Masters of Fine Art students from the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego. The work of these eighteen emerging artists ranges from interactive media, sculpture, film/video, photography to installation and reflects the culmination of their time spent at UCSD. Adriene Jenik, MFA graduate program faculty advisor said: “As a whole, the work of our recent Masters in Fine Art graduates reflects the impulses, obsessions and networks of exchange at play in contemporary art today. The work also reflects the overarching commitment within the Visual Arts Department to fostering art making and art discourse in a truly inter-media environment. At University of California San Diego, it is understood that art emerges from an often messy tangle of ideas, material engagement, intellectual research, and conversation.” The University Art Gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11am - 5pm.
