Event Description After the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971, Francis Bacon began a series of paintings known as the Black Triptychs. Hugh Davies, MCASD’s David C. Copley Director, has described these works as the “frenzied momentum of a struggle against death” and will discuss the series in light of his multiple 1973 interviews with the artist. A world-renowned scholar on the work of Francis Bacon, Davies has lectured on the artist internationally, most recently at the invitation of the Tate Modern in London, and has published extensively on the artist. He serves on the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee, and in 1999 curated the exhibition Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 1953.

Event Description Susan Street Fine Art Gallery presents “DOG n’ PONY,” a new group exhibition, July 16th to September 12th, 2009. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 16th, from 6-9 pm, in conjunction with Third Thursday Gallery Night on Cedros. The light-heartedness implied in the title, belies the deep and profound veneration the artists have for their subject matter. Joseph Piccillo, Juan Torcoletti, Deborah Brown, Matthew Rogers and six other artists approach the depiction of dogs and horses in the same way artists have throughout the history of art - to illuminate the social and cultural concerns of their world, often using these animals as a metaphor for the human condition. Joseph Piccillo masterfully depicts the rational beauty of his graceful, athletic horses, adding a touch of an irrational, dream-like quality. With potent symbolism and great emotional power Piccillo’s white horses seem to leap from the bounds of his large-scale canvases. Juan Torcoletti’s dogs read unmistakably as surrogates for human concerns. Torcoletti represents dogs in expressions, postures, and activities that are familiar to the viewer on two levels - as typical dog behavior as well as decidedly human emotions. Deborah Brown’s, “Pound Portraits” of shelter dogs produces striking images of abandoned dogs using a bird’s eye perspective, thus avoiding what could be excessive sentimentality. In Matthew Rogers “Dark Horse Series,” polo ponies are suspended and elevated with power and speed, representing freedom, adaptability and survival. Though designed to entertain and divert, this exhibition also seeks to reveal both the high artistic standards and richness the subject of dogs and horses continue to sustain in contemporary art today. Event Description SUSAN STREET FINE ART GALLERY presents BACKYARD BEACHES NEW WORKS BY JOSHUA JENSEN-NAGLE IN OUR BACK GALLERY July 16th – Sept. 12th, 2009 3rd Thursday Reception: August 20th, 6:00-9:00 pm BACKYARD BEACHES, new works by Joshua Jensen-Nagle, plays on our romanticized adherence to nostalgia and memory. Jensen-Nagle's new series feature reconstructed scenes from mid-century American vacation destinations of beachside hotel pools atop sandy shorelines. Inspired by childhood memories and dreams, these works are evidence of Jensen-Nagle’s life and a reflection of his past, which he creates on “urge, devotion, intuition, and instinct.” He states that, “whether I romanticize or reveal truth about my life is left up to the viewer’s own perception, their own awareness of the world around them, and their own experiences within that world.” Jensen-Nagle uses photography as a means to create rather than to document a reality. Continuing to explore different mediums in his production, this body of work begins with small painted postcards and vintage slides, which are then re-photographed using expired sx-70 Polaroid film. The enlarged images are face mounted to plexiglass, creating the reflective dream like quality that embodies Jensen-Nagle’s work and captures his international audience. The exhibition runs July 16th through Sept 13th, 2009 in conjunction with DOG n’ PONY, a group exhibition in the main gallery. A reception for dog artist, Deborah Brown will take place on Thursday, August 20th, from 6-9 pm, in conjunction with Third Thursday Gallery Night on Cedros.
