Get a great taste of food and art in University Heights on Sunday, September 20, 2009 from noon to 5 p.m. at the 2nd annual University Heights Community Development Corporation (UHCDC) Taste of University Heights. This year, the event is a collaborative effort with the 4th annual University Heights Arts Open, which means more of what University Heights already has to offer:fun, food, and art!
First, stroll through our quaint neighborhood enjoying sample delicacies from some of University Heights' diverse restaurants.Then, enjoy a free self-guided tour of the arts.
The UH Arts Open (UHAO) showcases the worksof over 100 new as well as celebrated artists, playwrights, performers andmusicians from the San Diego region, enlivening the historic University Heights community. The UHAO features local businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a free shuttle tourof artist studios in the area.
Trolley Barn Park is the starting point forthe tours, featuring 40 booths of visual artists of all mediums includingpainting, photography, art glass, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media, as wellas historic groups, community groups and the will call booth for the Taste of UH.
Swedenborg Hall hosts eight theater troops and local playwrights. From noon-1pm, free theater with one act plays from Janet S. Tiger, DJ Sullivan, Chronos Theatre Group, Talent To aMuse,DangerHouse Theater Company, Swedenborg Hall’s playwright-in-residence, KevinSix and New Perspective presents FeedingTime at the Human House by playwright David Wiener.
Swedenborg Hall also features free live music from Korrie Paliotto, Brothers Nasrat and John January, Happy Ron, BrendaXu, performance from Grupo Castaña Flamenco Ensemble and Master of Ceremonies, Mitch Feingold.
Diversionary Theatre hosts an exhibition ofartist Albert Jackson in their lobby. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library/School of the Arts features an open house with student art exhibit. Free Admission to the JA Cooley Museum for the Taste of University Heights and the UH ArtsOpen. On display are over two dozen automobiles from 1886 through 1933, along with 25 categories of antiques represented by collections. Lafayette Hotel features the Boulevard Arts District current public art displays as well as the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego Expressive Arts Program
A complimentary color program of the Taste and UHAO exhibits —including participating restaurants, artwork, and a walking/shuttle tour map-- will be available on the day of the event at information booths and online at www.UHarts.org. Free shuttle service will assist visitors on their Taste and artist studio tour throughout the day.
Open artists studios this year include Park Blvd Artworks BorrelliSpace studio artists: Sandra Teel, Jeanette Osias, Georges Merx Photography, Art Sueltz, and local neighborhood studios: Jo Caldwell, Chris Schaie, Irene Corey, Paul Stolte Designs, Mario Torero/Guillermo Acevedo, Larry Caveney, and Jeffrey Wynne.
Some of the participating restaurants include: Muzita Abyssinian Bistro, Soltan Banoo, Twiggs, El Zarape, Monica's at the Park, Pizza GourmetExpress, Eclipse Chocolat, Pizziera Luigi, Bahia Mexican Restaurant, CreamCoffee House, Loving Hut, Mama's Bakery & Lebanese Deli, and Gulf CoastGrill.
The event is presented by the UH Community Development Corporation and the UH Arts Association, in partnership with the UH Community Association, El Cajon Blvd Business Improvement Association, Swedenborgian Church of San Diego, Save OurHeritage Organisation, UH Recreational Council, UH Historical Society, Diversionary Theatre and the Athenaeum.
The UH Arts Open is free while Taste of UHtickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. Taste of UH tickets may bepurchased in advance from the UH Community Development Corporation at (619)297-3166, Muzita Abyssinian Bistro(4651 Park Boulevard) and at the Art Foodies reception onSeptember 4th at Swedenborg Hall.
