Event Description Thumbprint Gallery is proud to exhibit the latest works by Michael Carini and Eric Wixon. Michael Carini is a San Diego based painter and California native. Trained in Los Angeles, Carini studied at Loyola Marymount while simultaneously serving as an apprentice under respected artists Jane Brucker and Roland Reiss. Graduating at the top of his class with several distinct honors including the Scholar of Distinction Award in painting, Carini returned to his hometown of San Diego in 2006. Due to debilitating personal issues, the artist’s studio remained locked for the latter part of 2008 and most of 2009. It was at this time that life presented an unexpected twist. On the evening of April 27th, 2009, Carini was violently attacked in his University Heights apartment, sustaining severe trauma in the form of facial contusions, multiple fractures, ocular trauma that rendered him unable to fully open his left eye for nearly a month, and a concussion that noticeably altered his memory and cognitive abilities. In the subsequent months, Carini returned to his studio with renewed passion, energy, and a new state of mind to produce a body of work unlike anything he had previously envisioned. It is the artist’s hope that you will enjoy the experience of this work as he invites you into the uncensored depths of his mind to catch a glimpse of the other side. Eric Wixon earned his BFA from Kent State University in 2001 and has since shown his work at a diverse range of venues nationwide and overseas. Taos Center for the Arts in New Mexico, a private residence in Carlsbad, California, and the College of New Jersey for their National Drawing Competition, to name a few. He has done original art on shoes for Sneaker Pimps (an international traveling exhibition that has been covered by Transworld, MTV, Time, etc.) and On The Wall (a benefit art show in Portland, Oregon sponsored by Vans to raise money for skateparks). His work has also been used by companies like Liquid Force for wakeboard and apparel graphics. Whether it's public commissioned murals in New Zealand or the bottom of a freind's surfboard in San Diego, Eric is always making art.

Event Description Permanent Transition
Saturday April 10, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, UC San Diego Visual Arts Facility Seminar Room #366
Permanent Transition, the third annual UC San Diego Visual Arts PhD Symposium, will be held on April 10, to coincide with Open Studios. "Art," as an idea, a product, and a condition, is increasingly defined through properties of oscillation - movement, fluidity, transition, and circulation. The art world, particularly during the last few decades, had generated new and proximate forms of creation and discourse, which have arguably emerged from the ideas and relations of past modernities. Unfixed boundaries between exhibition and collection, mobile collections and evolving archives, these are the marks of art in "permanent transition." This conference seeks to further explore and question concepts of stability, permanence and dominance in contemporary art.
Schedule of Events:
9:30 am Registration and Breakfast
10:00 am - Panel 1: Flux "Social Work: Politics, Police and the Legalistic in Art" Matthew Rana, California College of the Arts Eric Morrill, University of California, Irvine
11:15 am Coffee Break
11:30 am - Panel 2: Reception "The Generous Object: The Relational and the Aesthetic in Contemporary Art" Elyse Mallouk, California College of the Arts "The Unstable Treasure of Contemporary African Art" Rochelle LeGrandsawyer, University of California, Los Angeles

Andrew Weiner, University of California, Berkeley
3:45 pm Keynote Address: Okwui Enwezor
5:00 pm Closing and Reception
Permanent Transition is organized by the PhD Department in Art History, Theory and Criticism at the University of California, San Diego and generously supported by the UCSD Humanities Center and the Graduate Student Association.
