Event Description Painting World War II is an historic first examination of paintings by California Style watercolor artists on the subject of WWII. 55 paintings depicting scenes of California mobilizing for the war as well as images of the war overseas will be on view. Featured artists include Arthur Beaumont, Rex Brandt, Hardie Gramatky, Dong Kingman, Barse Miller, Phil Paradise, Charles Payzant, Ed Reep, Millard Sheets, and Milford Zornes. A preview reception introduces the exhibition on Saturday, April 17 from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. OMA’s receptions are known for their party atmosphere complete with wine and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres prepared by OMA’s own Culinary Arts Council. There will be a special performance by the Antelope Valley Jazz Ensemble directed by band leader Lee Matalon. The ensemble will be playing swing music reflective of the World War II era. Free admission to all active military in uniforms and their families. Admission to the reception is $10, members of the museum enjoy complimentary admission as a benefit of membership. The exhibition will be on view April 18 through October 3, 2010.

Forged in the Great Depression, California Style watercolors form an important West Coast chapter of American Scene and American Regionalist art. As a group these artists examine a broad survey of everyday life in California and create memorable artistic accounts of the unfolding local history of California from 1930 through the 1970’s.  Each painting in the exhibition tells an intimate and dramatic story offering viewers an opportunity to experience WWII from the artist’s perspective. Many aspects of WWII are examined in this exhibition. War efforts on the home front by private citizens and the Red Cross are profiled. Regionalist images of the military presence in California gearing up for the Pacific Theatre will be on view, as well as paintings of soldiers on leave, soldiers guarding military installations and the delivery of tanks on trains.

Oceanside Museum of Art is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown Oceanside, California within walking distance from the Oceanside Transit Center with Amtrak, Sprinter and NCTD Coaster stops. Event Description In celebration of April 2010 “Month of the Military Child”, OMA is presenting Painting the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, a juried art exhibition for youth ages 9-18 at Camp Pendleton Youth Centers, whose parents are active military. This program is sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation, in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services, Marine & Family Services and A.R.T.S. (A Reason to Survive). Jurors are Skip Pahl, outgoing Executive Director of OMA, Kate McCavitt, art teacher with A.R.T.S., and Trish Spencer, Director of Marine & Family Services on Camp Pendleton. Winners of the Junior (9-12) and Senior (13-18) divisions will be announced at a special free reception on April 25 at 2 pm at the museum. Refreshments will be provided. Don McKinney, District Representative for Congressman Darrell Issa will also present certificates of commendation.

Art is a therapeutic form of healing that enables young people to express their deepest sentiments. Having a parent leave the family to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan can be very difficult for a child to deal with. On Camp Pendleton the Marine & Family Services Youth Centers provide children the opportunity to express themselves during difficult times. Painting The Iraq and Afghanistan Wars will be on view at Oceanside Museum of Art from April 18 through May 10, 2010. Four art exhibitions will be on view during the reception: Painting World War II: The California Watercolor Style Artists, Plastic Fantastic: Allison Renshaw, The Things They Carried: World War II Trench Art, and Honor: Marine Portraits by Stathis Orphanos.

For more information call the museum at 760.435.3720. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. General admission is $8, $5 for seniors and free for students, military and their dependents. The museum is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown Oceanside, within walking distance from the Oceanside Transit Center with Amtrak, Coaster, Sprinter and Metrolink stops.
