Event Description Conversations of Art & Science with Roman De Salvo and Dr. V.S. Ramachandran THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2010 6:30 PM THE NEUROSCIENCES INSTITUTE, LA JOLLA, CA For the address and directions- see Direction page An evening of artist meets scientist: The Artist, Roman De Salvo with the Neuroscientist, Dr. Ramachandran. An evening of unrehearsed and unscripted conversation. What are the common denominators that exist between artist and neuroscientist? Topics will emerge as the evening progresses. Questions will unfold from the participants as well as questions submitted from the attendees. An evening for inquisitive minds. Dr. Ramachandran is the director of UCSD's Center for Brain and Cognition. His major areas of research are: cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neurology - the study of cognitive and perceptual deficits in human neurological patients, neural plasticity and "phantom limbs", stroke rehabilitation, human visual perception/cognition, and visual psychophysics. He obtained an M.D. at Stanley Medical College in Madras, India, a PhD. from Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He has been called “The Marco Polo of Neuroscience” by Richard Dawkins. Newsweek magazine named him a member of “The Century Club”, one of the 100 most prominent people to watch in the 21st century. Rama brilliantly examines the interface of science and humanities. http://cbc.ucsd.edu/ramabio.html Roman de Salvo is a contemporary American conceptual artist whose sculpture and installations utilize everyday objects and materials in inventive and unexpected ways. De Salvo's work combines his interest in craft, technology, language, and materials with ever present attributes of wit and play. Roman received a MFA from UCSD. He has shown professionally throughout the United States and in Europe, including the Whitney Biennial, 2000, Musee d’Art, Givemy, 2000, Museum of Contemporary Art, SD 1996, 2001, 2006, The California Biennial 2002, Seattle Art Museum, 2003, The Public Art Fund, NYC, 2003 and the Nevada Museum of Art, 2004. Event Description Tonight kicks off the San Diego Museum of Art's Thursday evening Summer Salon Series. Celebrate the legacy of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec in conjuntion with the Museum's upcoming exhibition, Toulouse Lautrec's Paris, as we turn the Museum into a salon from 5-9pm. Different contemporary and emerging artists will perform, present or demonstrate their latest works throughout the Museum. Art making and a cash bar round out the evenings activities. Tonight, Dr. James Grebl leads the last Seldom Seen of the year by opening up the vaults and bringing out the work of Fritz Werner. Alida Cervantes presents her latest video, De la Vista Nace el Amor, where she plays all of the characters. Josh Bellfy blends old fashioned photography with digital technology to make a photo booth like no other, Zac Monday will roam the galleries while donning crocheted, alien like costumes from his studio and Eddie Miramontes uses his ukulele and bohemian dress to take us back to the turn of the twentieth century that Lautrec lived in.
