Event Description Song of Flesh and Blood (Observations of Body identity) With Artists Adamo Macri Daphne Hill Kat Schneck ... At The Garage 4141 Alabama Street San Diego, Ca 09/18/2010 6-9pm This exhibition represents three artists that are examining ideas of the body identity within and outside of culture. “All these convexities and orifices have a common characteristic; it is within them that the confines between the body and the world are overcome; there is an interchange and an interorientation. This is why they remain event of and in the life of the grotesque body, the acts of the bodily drama, take place in this sphere. Eating, drinking, defecation and other (sweating, blowing of the nose, sneezing), as well as copulation, pregnancy, dismemberment, swallowing up by another body- and the outer world, or on the confines of the old and new body. In all these events the beginning and end of life are closely linked and interwoven.” Milhail Bakhtin (Rabelais and His World) 4141 Alabama Street, San Diego, Ca

Event Description Meet the artists from the current exhibit: LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD: CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN AMERICAN ART Meet the artists on Saturday, September 18 at 2:00 p.m. and hear them discuss their artistic history, the meaning behind the artwork on view, and projects they are currently working on. The talk is free with museum admission and free for OMA members, students and military. ... Einar and Jamex de la Torre have a unique approach to working with glass. They push the boundaries of this fragile sensual medium by infusing it with edgy layers of irony that comment on their Mexican American bi-cultural experiences, contemporary culture, historical facts and cultural myths. There is a great deal of Meso-American imagery in their work such as Olmec figures and Aztec mythical symbols of the heart and the sun that are juxtaposed with humorous visual and literary references. For more than twenty years Raul Guerrero has been living and creating art in San Diego. Born in Brawley, California near the border to Mexico, Guerrero grew up in National City. His Mexican-American background includes Tarahumaran and Yaqui Indian heritage. The works in the exhibition reflect his recent narrative realism style that allows him to communicate his interest in exploring the histories of culture in the United States, Latin America and Europe. These paintings also reflect his personal history as an American of Mexican descent and his exploration of cultural identity. Working with a variety of popular symbols from his cultural background one finds a mix of Mexican, American and Southern Californian and Border imagery in his work.

Event Description Jan's work is Expressionistic and somewhat Abstract in style. She tries to draw and/or paint what she feels about the subject. She speaks her thoughts visually. Jan's work in silk painting is more contemporary and spontaneous than the precise traditional work of the past. Jan uses steam set dyes and paints and a multitude of silk painting application techniques which in turn creates a complexity of overlays and juxtapositions. The unique textures, colors, and patterns on the silk surface is exciting and challenging to me. When all is unified, the visual story line she's portraying gives the viewer a second and even third opportunity to contemplate what the piece expresses.
