Event Description

The San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery is pleased to present Unearned Intimacies, featuring three Southern California artists showing in photography, mixed media, and drawing.

The artists, working in various art forms and from far different perspectives, create new ways of looking at how we live and view our private lives and how those moments can be rendered public, with or without our knowledge.

The full potential power of art to express our sentiments requires a truthfulness and authenticity that comes from living isolated within ourselves. The interior of our lives is reflected outward from the realms where we dwell and create our personal history. These private spaces allow us to reason, invent, remember and dream.

Event Description Thursday October 14th 6-8pm FREE Film Screening of Living in Tijuana by Katherine Sweetman and Que Viva La Lucha by Gustavo Vazquez as part of CONTROverse: Contemporary Visions of the US-Mexico Border 6pm-8pm ...“CONTROverse: Contemporary Visions of the US-Mexico Border,” showcases the work of a small but diverse group of multi-media artists. For these artists, the border exists as a rift that constitutes a controverse not universe, a place where artis...ts are compelled to defend the humanity of people or imagine a dystopic future. The artists in this exhibition use the border as the context for their explorations of personal, technological, social and political relations in crisis. LIVING IN TIJUANA provides a glimpse into the lives of seven, very unusual inhabitants of the city of Tijuana, Mexico. Derrik, Gerda, Jodi, Jason, Michael, Iana, and Jenny are not Hispanic, and they don't exactly appear as though they would "blend in" in the Mexican border town that has been called one the most dirty and dangerous cities of North America. Yet this film follows these gringos, in their daily activities, while they show and explain why they chose to live in the city they love-- Tijuana. QUE VIVA LA LUCHA Gustavo’s Vazquez upbeat documentary that takes us on an exciting journey to the inner world of Mexican wrestling. In this documentary we can arguably state that Tijuana is at the forefront of one of Mexico’s spectator sports, Lucha Libre. Recently El Tecolote interviewed Gustavo Vazquez
