The Garage Presents : Barb Goldsand " Inside The Eye; reconstructing the gaze".
The focus of these creative-investigative endeavors has involved an in depth scrutiny of the notion regarding the "medical gaze" as discussed by author Michel Foucault in The Birth of the Clinic. As a registered nurse, I came to the uncomfortable realization that my nursing career was basically an embodiment of that Gaze--which had been cond...itioned primarily through nursing school training, then as a consequence of on the job experience within the medical field.
Concluding such education to be inherently flawed, I felt the necessity to integrate my experience as a nurse with that of a patient. This was best accomplished by inserting myself into patient situations while remaining cognizant of the certain knowledge I afforded as a consequence of my professional training. Thus at the same time I was representative of the gaze, subject to the gaze, and objectifying the gaze.
The scenarios are authentic. Appointments were arranged ostensibly to have annual medical testing performed such as a physical exam, PAP smear, blood testing and a mammogram. The various processes were photo documented during their process to establish a permanent visual record of my dual experience as nurse and patient, and in a sincere effort to better integrate the Gaze.
