Event Description Carol McCusker's talk, Know Thyself, will focus on fine art photography, specifically questions around how we develop a vision, what influences come to bear on our creative output, and the roll of galleries, museums, photo competitions and portfolio reviews. Using music as a corollary, she'll explore how photography falls into as many different categories (folk, rock, jazz, country, world beat, classical, etc.), but how, within each category, there are equivalents of 'Musak' at one end of the spectrum and inspired innovation at the other. What she seeks from all creative people, including herself, is the ability to 'know thyself,' and to honestly know where you fit in this spectrum.

Event Description SUSAN STREET FINE ART GALLERY is pleased to present our fourth solo exhibition by Philip Buller. In this new body of work, "Inside Passage," the artist, with his unique blend of realism and abstraction continues to offer the viewer the mystery of the story each painting tells. Buller is well recognized for his ability to create paintings with a certain intensity of feeling, reconnecting us to our own sensory intelligences and human experiences. His process of painting, applying paint, removing paint and allowing each piece to guide him, becomes a search for a passageway into a particular state of mind. In this exhibition the artist continues to paint intuitively while exploring his interest in the Inside Passage and the ever changing and timeless relationships of the people, the land and the water. Drawn to the recorded visual history of the protected waterway of British Columbia, where he now lives, Buller presents a sense of the rich and dynamic natural environment as it relates to people and their ability to live both inside and outside of themselves. The artist’s interest in changing relationships is evidenced in this body of work and in his recent paintings of figures in motion and the subtle impressions of vulnerability inherent in specific movements. Always transcending the literal narrative, these superbly executed paintings speak poetically to the mysterious bond between past and present, ultimately uncovering meaning from an unconscious place for the viewer. The Inside Passage by Philip Buller runs November 4th, 2010 – January 2nd, 2011. An Artist Reception will take place on Thursday, November 4th, from 6-9 pm. What she seeks from all creative people, including herself, is the ability to 'know thyself,' and to honestly know where you fit in this spectrum. McCusker is also concerned with the use of language when photographers talk about their work, which can often confuse not just their audience but themselves and what they hope to achieve. To make her point, she'll use examples from the current Art in Photography Show, its attending lecture series, the history of photography and a competition she recently juried. Carol McCusker is an independent curator, writer and educator. For eight years, she was Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, where she curated over thirty-five exhibitions. She is an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego and UCSD Extension. Recently, she was Juror for the prestigious 2010 ICP/NY Infinity Award, and the 2010 Julia Margaret Cameron Award in York, UK. McCusker has review portfolios nationally and internationally, including the Lishui Photo Festival, Lishui, China; Camera Lucida, Portland, OR; Houston Photo Fest, TX; Review Santa Fe, NM; Atlanta Celebrates Photography, GA; and Review L.A. She writes for The Photo Review, B&W, Color, Communication Arts, and numerous artists' catalogues.

Event Description L Street Fine Art Gallery presents “Eat, Paint, Love,” the current Arts for Healing project featuring new works by artist Gerrit Greve, along with teens from San Diego County and art teachers assisting the project. The exhibit of Greve’s work, in conjunction with Eat Your Art Out 2010 supporting San Diego Visual Arts Network, will run through the months of November and December 2010. . An artists’ reception will be held on November 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., during which paintings created by participating local students will be auctioned to benefit San Diego Visual Arts Network and Family Health Centers of San Diego. “Eat Paint Love” was in part inspired by the currently popular book “Eat Pray Love”. The works featured in this exhibition explore and illustrate the personal journey of the artist that takes us to unusual places in a creative quest to explore the artist’s own nature and to learn the art of spiritual balance. “Eat,” the physical part of the journey, is represented by the obvious eatables such as fruit to the less obvious use of dining tablecloths. “Paint”, the spiritual part of the journey, is explored in works such as The Shroud of Buddha, made of paint transferred with crocheted tablecloths, obscuring the face of the Buddha. “Love”, the synthesis or spiritual balance, is visualized in works such as the Reincarnated Dining Chairs, based on the Chinese symbol for “human”.
