Event Description Jay Jonson Lecture: The 1980s Downtown San Diego Art Scene Learn about the history of the San Diego Art Scene in the 1980s during an education lecture by artist Jay Johnson on Saturday, July 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. After completing a B.A. in sculpture at San Diego State University, Johnson became an integral part of the first wave of artists to open alternative exhibition spaces in downtown San Diego during the early 1980s prior to the development of the Gaslamp Quarter. The lecture is free for OMA members and complimentary with museum admission. No reservations are necessary and seating is limited to 125 people.

Event Description ArtHatch and Distinction Gallery are celebrating their 9th Anniversary with a Studio Artists Exhibition, featuring the collective art of their very own in-house Studio Artists. Highlighting a wide range of work from original paintings, photography, and other mixed media, this exhibit is a representation of the broad spectrum of current local San Diego artists. Including artwork by professional artists such as Victor Roman, Cathrine Edlinger-Kunze, and more. Side by side emerging and accomplished artists come together to present their artistic voices and inspirations, giving rise to a diverse and creative show; representing over 30 artists. Event Description Join local photojournalist Sam Hodgson for an engaging, hands-on workshop inspired by our current photojournalism exhibition, Pictures of the Year International. Environmental Portraiture Saturday, July 13th, 2013; 2pm-6pm In this 4 hour course, we will discuss the elements of a storytelling portrait, how to approach subjects, how to deal with natural light under difficult conditions and how to make a subject comfortable in front of the camera through both gallery and classroom instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills by finding interesting photo subjects in Balboa Park and creating an image that reveals something about an individual and her/his relationship to the park. The session will conclude with a group critique of the images created in the workshop. *Space is limited to 15 participants. Please bring a digital camera and USB thumb drive. Curtis Benzle is Professor Emeritus at Colunbus College of Art & Design. He has held over thirty solo exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Asia.
