Three years ago Berenice was struck by chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Due to the disease many of her joints are crumbling. Her hip became so bad that she could not walk nor sleep due to the pain. Her hip got worse and she had to operate immediately . The unexpected rush nature of the operation forced her to take an unpaid leave of absence from her new job and she currently has no income and needs to buy medicine and special devices to help her out. Unfortunately, RA continues to ravage her body and she may need knee replacement surgery in the near future. Berenice Badillo has been a member of the Border Art Workshop, Chicano Park Steering Committee and an active muralist and art teacher in many area communities. She helped start Elemental which gave youth a venue and an opportunity to have a voice by deejaying, rapping, and painting graffiti murals with well known artists. She has run a non profit called San Diego Streetscape that gave children and youth in San Ysidro a chance to paint murals and practice theatre. Berenice has created murals in many San Diego communities, including Chicano Park, as well as in Peru, Japan, Cuba and Mexico. She is currently a marriage and family art therapist at a homeless youth shelter in North Park. In September, after much rehab, she will walk down the aisle with fiancee Adam Straubinger. +++ All funds raised (after expenses) from the door, donations, and the art auction will be given to Berenice Badillo. The organizers will receive no funds. Organized by the Red CalacArts Collective. The Red CalacArts Collective, a project of Calaca Press, is a multidisciplinary arts and activist organization that focuses on creating, publishing, producing, and presenting Chicano, Latin American and indigenous related art focusing on issues dealing with human rights and social justice. Artists and students are invited to bring their oil paints, acrylics, charcoal or pencils and work for three hours with a model. Easels and drawing benches are available in the life drawing studio. All the models are trained and experienced in posing for artists. The three hour session begins with a few short poses followed by one or two long poses. However, there is flexibility to meet the needs of the majority of those in attendance. The Open Studio is designed for artists and people who have had previous drawing experience as there is no formal instruction. No registration or advanced reservation is required to participate in the Open Studio Life Drawing. Just bring your supplies. Open Studio sessions are available twice a week. Offering the opportunity to work with a model for three hours at the low price of $10 is another way that the Art Academy of San Diego is working to encourage artists and students throughout San Diego and further our mission of: “Supporting the artist in all of us”. Event Description "Arthur Lavine: Nimble Witness" The sheer breadth of Lavine's seventy years of image making, reveals how history may be lived, how reality is personally nuanced, and how closely looking tips the balance. Lavine's image of "Working Hands," which was featured in the 1955 "Family of Man" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, is provided as a bench mark and point of departure for thinking about the many different kinds of photography Lavine has done throughout his long career, from his student work for Clarence White Jr. in Maine in the 1940s, free lance photography for Fortune, Life, Esquire, and other magazines, as well as his twenty three years as the manager of the photo department at Chase Manhattan. Lavine's exhibition at 4 walls will be presented to highlight the artist's wide ranging aesthetic concerns and the re-exminations and reflections that he imposed on his perceptions as he refined his vision over time. Lavine's vocabulary of agility and poise, reception to the momentary, and participation in the social conntinuum of chance amazements along the way will be as equally apparent in this show. "Nimble Witness" is presented in conjunction with an exhibition of Lavine's photography featured at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park in San Diego May 12 - September 2, 2007. For more information please contact 4 walls at 619-501-0879 or info@4wallsgallery.com.
