ENVIROSCAPES: JEN TRUTE RETROSPECTIVE December 8, 2012-April 21, 2013 Opening Reception, December 8, 2 pm Driven by her insatiable fascination with environmental degradation, Jen Trute’s surreal paintings poignantly evoke awareness of the human impact on nature and the fragility of our global ecosystem. Approaching her subject matter with scientific detail, Trute’s dystopian narratives reference a myriad of interests ranging from natural sciences, climate change, endangered animals and art history to sociopolitical concerns. This retrospective exhibition features Trute’s work from approximately 1998-2011 including paintings and preparatory drawings and early portrait paintings that show her focused evolution into environmentally-conscious art. Enviroscapes is the first museum retrospective since the artist’s unfortunate passing in 2011. The Opening Reception will take place on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m., and is complimentary for OMA members and free with museum admission.

FLAVIA GILMORE: PAPER, WOOD, METAL December 8, 2012-April 28, 2013 Opening Reception and Illustrated Lecture, December 8, 2:00 pm In her playful assemblages, Flavia Gilmore creates surprising juxtapositions of utilitarian objects that evoke a poignant look at consumer culture. Primarily working with found material and domestic debris, the work in this exhibition will take a focused look at Gilmore’s long and distinguished career in San Diego over the last 20 years. Meet the artist during her illustrated lecture on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. The lecture is complimentary for museum members and free with museum admission.

Zepf Alt. Gallery is proud to present “Moving in the Shadows of Colorful Mind”, a solo exhibition by artist Bret Barrett. Bret Barrett’s first solo show at Zepf Alt. will display small to large kinetic sculptures as well as his exquisite surrealist paintings. Bret describes his work as “Kinetic Surrealism”, in which he re-constructs everyday urban artifacts to create moving paintings and sculptures. Bret integrates his adeptness in oil painting and electronics to engage the viewer in still life motion. From a young age, Bret collected small pieces of ephemera which include parts of computers, large format printers, vacuum cleaners and kodak cameras. He used these pieces for inspiration which sometimes lead to sculptures, paintings or moveable objects. Bret embraces his outsider and underground esthetic creating work that is fun and thought provoking.

Distinction Gallery and ArtHatch present from "Figment to Fruition" a solo show by long time exhibiting artist "Denise Bledsoe". Denise brings her characters to life through clay and mixed media and viewers cannot help but react strongly upon seeing them. Whether the reaction is to laugh, oo and ah, or cry Denise's figures are never ignored. The opening reception with the artist will be on Saturday Dec 8th from 6-10 pm and will be accompanied by live music, open studios, and Stone beer and wine for those 21+. Denise has been involved in various forms of art since she was a child, but she has always found that her true calling was working with sculpture and mixed media to create three three-dimensional artworks. Much like tending to the arrangement of rocks in a Zen garden is a peaceful and relaxing activity, EXIST1981 has also found his Zen in creating his own very detailed and intricate line work. It is a slow and time consuming process as he transfers his emotion and experience from his mind to his unique artwork. However, there is something quite mischievous within the undulating curves and sharp-edged shapes. In EXIST1981â€™s upcoming show, â€œCorazÃ³nâ€, at Thumbprint Gallery on December 8, his latest life experiences and changes give him a new perspective. It influences his multimedia art and allows him to see beauty in the toughest of times. EXIST1981 has been inspired by graffiti from a young age. As a kid, he saw street tags and throw-ups in his town of El Paso. He got into making stickers, posters, and silkscreen art when he moved to San Diego. As his talent grew, he became more involved in putting up his work in the streets.
