Event Description This group show reflects divergent approaches in the graduate sculpture department at San Diego State University. The artists demonstrate varied, but related sensibilities with attention to strong material presence, where physicality becomes a vital aspect of experiencing or understanding the objects and surrounding space. Process and experimentation are integral to the nature of the artworks, primarily derived using everyday, commonplace materials. In alluding to recognizable objects, each artist is able to find ways of connection to present and past memories and experiences. Artists: Richard Keely is Associate Professor of Sculpture at SDSU. Ainsley Buhl Cramer, Matt Picon, and Aren Skalman are current MFA candidates.

Event Description Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of early works on paper by artist Manny Farber (1917-2008), titled WORKS ON PAPER 1967-1975. This is Farber's eighteenth solo exhibition at QCA. Manny Farber's monumental color field paintings created in New York and California during the years 1967 through 1975 were cut, stained, saturated, sliced, wet, glued, painted, folded, collaged, pleated, pasted, layered, dripped, brushed, glazed, bled, marked, colored, tinted, textured, smeared, pierced, trimmed, slit, creased, buffed, wiped, varnished, washed, graphed, drawn, scraped, burnished, rubbed, scoured, soaked, coated, veiled, and wrapped. They were "action" paintings, the geometric shapes intuitively constructed and then aggressively painted using the studio floor as an easel much the way Jackson Pollack made his drip paintings.

Event Description In Cover to Cover (On Loan from the Collection), Matthew Hebert presents a new body of work that draws inspiration from artists’ books in the Athenaeum’s collection. Developed during a period of dedicated study at the Athenaeum, Hebert found sources for sculptural interventions within the library. These interventions incorporate lighting, motion, and sound in an effort to represent and/or reinterpret the original materials. In addition to these site specific interactions with the Athenaeum, Hebert will exhibit six Opaque Displays. These are sculptural objects which house mechanical dioramas depicting works of post-minimalist art. These pieces will serve as an introduction to Hebert’s work and set the stage for visitors’ subsequent experience within the Athenaeum. Matthew Hebert creates work that deals with technology and its effects on the environment and our sense of place.

Event Description Wild Walk is a painterly examination of the simultaneous fear-and-thrill of going into the wild. My canvases and drawings explore the ambivalent response we have to untamed nature. Setting out in pursuit of a perfect day’s journey, we discover that tree limbs can truly be limbs, especially when they reach out to snare, caress, irritate, or slap. Amidst the verdant beauty at hand, there is also foreboding, fear, alarm, and distrust of the senses. The visual drama of up-close trees and thick underbrush tell contradictory stories of nature’s danger and its primordial pull, paired with the promise of solace and wisdom. ---Jeanne Dunn

Event Description Scott White Contemporary Art is pleased to present “Hither and Yon,” an innovative and progressive exhibition by artist David Adey. In “Hither and Yon” Adey utilizes a diverse range of materials and techniques to investigate the concept of constraints as a metaphor for the human condition. Each artwork within this exhibition has undergone a methodical process for its creation within the bounds of a self-realized constraint. With this approach Adey is able to find not only artistic freedom, but also a common thread that unites these seemingly tangential mediums.
