Over 3,000 community members will gather at the Center’s 19th Annual Día de los Muertos Festival. Guests are invited to participate by creating altars in honor of their loved ones in a special area outside of the Center’s museum. Candles, crosses, and clay bowls will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring mementos, pictures, flowers, and other items for their altars.
The festival will also feature traditional Mexican fare, face painting, Mariachi los Caballeros de San Diego, and guests will have the opportunity to decorate their own sugar skull and create miniature ofrendas, as well as other fun activities. Guests can explore the rich history of Mexico at the Center’s museum exhibition, Colores de la Muerte, as admission will be free on November 1st!

Neil Shigley: Invisible People
Striving to spread awareness and tell the stories of the homeless population in our city, Neil Shigley: Invisible People focuses on select works Shigley has created which document San Diego’s homeless, a group often hidden and forgotten. Through the presented large scale block prints and graphite on paper works he captures the incredible character that life on the streets has given these individuals, many of whom are from his neighborhood near downtown San Diego. These portraits of “invisible people” show great nobility, beauty, strength and vulnerability; they are there if we only look. By presenting these faces on a large scale, we are forced to confront them and the situation that so many people in our nation are in.
Forty large-scale, high-resolution black and white photographs present intense portraits of a culturally diverse, international and local group of women who demonstrate how deeply women participate in society at all levels. These women range in age from 18 to 92, showcasing the courage, wisdom and talents of women of all ages in our society and global discourse. This exhibition directly confronts the viewer and audience about our core community and societal perceptions and artifices that influence our social, economic, and political landscape.
This collaborative exhibition was produced by Alexis Dixon and Pablo Mason. Pablo Mason is a native of Santa Fe, NM, who has worked as a San Diego based commercial photographer since moving to California in 1982. Mason studied photography in Boston and subsequently opened a studio in Mexico City.
