Event Description The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is pleased to announce An Introduction to Francis Bacon, a series of art history lectures presented by Hugh Davies, director emeritus of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. On May 25, the subject will be “Francis Bacon: Paintings from 1945-1973” and on June 29, “Francis Bacon: the Late Work.” Hugh Davies, a long-time Bacon scholar, currently serves as one of the five members of the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee, which published his catalogue raisonné in 2016. Note: If you previously attended the April 13 lecture introducing the art of Francis Bacon and had purchased tickets for the series (originally planned for just 2 lectures), please contact the library to find out how to incorporate the third lecture.

Event Description Sculpture in the Garden Sculptures from regional artists installed in natural, picturesque setting Now – April 2018 Free with paid admission or membership. “Art is a harmony parallel with nature.” - Paul Cezanne, French Artist (1839 – 1906) San Diego Botanic Garden has a rich heritage of garden art, both natural and man-made. Our 37-acre urban oasis provides the beautiful natural setting for this year’s Sculpture in the Garden - a collection of 49 works supplied by 31 artists. From June 2017 to April 2018 visitors are invited to engage with these diverse creations set against a unique backdrop of dragon trees, rare fruit gardens, bamboo groves, tranquil ponds, and other natural settings. Art works from top regional, national, and international artists have been mindfully selected by Naomi Nussbaum Art & Design, curator of this year’s show.
