Event Description R.B. STEVENSON GALLERY is pleased to announce the exhibition “Apparent / Transparent” featuring paintings by San Francisco artist Frances McCormack. The opening reception for the artist will be on Saturday October 19th from 5 to 8 pm. The exhibition will remain on view thru November 16, 2019. Apparent/Transparent is the seventh solo exhibition of the San Francisco artist Frances McCormack at the R B Stevenson Gallery. Her new oil paintings explore the dynamic of constriction and release, a simple idea but one that the artist continues to find rich with formal possibility and personally resonant. Through her daily exploration of flora she invents vivid abstract forms conjuring trees, roots and vines. These apparitions are filtered through the lens of the marvelous: a task ideally suited to painting. In this series McCormack expands her artistic practice to collage, a new medium for her. Working with collections of landscape designs, ink drawings and old books of botanical studies, McCormack manipulates and arranges a variety of elements from these found materials to unique and surprising effect. Intrigued by an essay of the American psychologist James Hillman from the 1980\'s on the Greek concept of Necessity or Anake, McCormack explores its many ancient associations: necklace, yoke and constriction. Conjured with authority and eros these botanical inventions, bound by a restricting form, build on and expand her previously established visual language. Frances McCormack is a veteran Bay Area painter. she is the recipient of an Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome and her numerous gallery and museum shows have won many critical reviews in the press. In addition McCormack serves as Professor Emerita at the San Francisco Art Institute. She created videos for the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and curated the exhibition \"Silence, Exile and Cunning\" for the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.
