| Event Description |
The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is proud to present José Hugo Sánchez: Amoxtlis, on view June 6 through August 16, 2026.
Through printmaking, sculpture, video, and mural, Sánchez explores image making traditions rooted in Mesoamerican codices while reflecting contemporary life along the U.S.–Mexico border. The exhibition brings together large scale installations and immersive works that examine cultural memory, migration, identity, and the movement of ideas across borders.
At the center of the exhibition is Codex Tonalpohualli, a series of monumental printed banners inspired by the divinatory solar calendar and concepts of birth, renewal, and cyclical time.
Opening Reception:
Saturday, June 6, 2026
4–6 PM
José Hugo Sánchez lives and works between Mexico and the United States. His multidisciplinary practice draws from pre Columbian codices, Chicano visual culture, and mass media to create a hybrid visual language shaped by contemporary border realities. |
