Event Description This conversation will focus on the adoption and use of urban space by a range of individuals and groups, particularly skateboarders and other urban sports, as shown in the current exhibition at UCSD's University Art Gallery entitled “Shaun Gladwell.” It will focus on the Washington Street Skate Park that is an example of the re-appropriation of remnant vacant parcels in the city. This space was activated “illegally” with a non-traditional land use and a citizen led process to “legalize it” In doing so it unveiled multiple layers of regulatory activity which actually contributed to the long term vacancy and that ultimately prevented any type of legal development occurring. Speakers will include: Teddy Cruz, Associate Professor Department of Visual Arts UCSD Mo Sammak, Director of Public Works, City Engineer, City of Solana Beach Glen Wagner, Founder, Washington Street Skate Park San Diego
