“Excavating the Contemporary landscape: Programs and Projects of the Center for Land Use Interpretation”

The Center for Land Use Interpretation www.clui.org is a contemporary take on landscape art. The CLUI takes a broadly interdisciplinary approach to the investigation of land use, drawing on the natural sciences, sociology, art, architecture, and history.
Much in the way that Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty is emblematic of American sublime landscape painting, the CLUI under the directorship of Matt Coolidge has also advanced this art form. They study not just the land but how humans use the land. It’s as if the stakes have been raised-given the realities of global warming and resource consumption, it’s fair to say that they have and Coolidge/CLUI have responded to the changing environment with an advanced landscape art. |
