Event Description SUSAN STREET FINE ART GALLERY is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring the new paintings of two imaginative talents, San Francisco artist Michael Brennan and San Diego based painter Robert Treloar. The new works of these two West coast artists are both visually complex and emotionally captivating. Michael Brennan’s dreamlike oils on canvas are a celebration of paint and its' many properties as it transforms from wet to dry, soft to hard, with a full awareness of Dalinian theory. A conscious effort has been made in both subject matter and in the actual handling of the paint to not take itself too seriously. A lowbrow sensibility pokes fun at both the hierarchy of painting and in many instances at the work itself. There is a perceived innocence in its' narration that contrasts with more serious underlying current themes and subjects - both political and pop cultural – with a nostalgic touch. The overall intent is to appeal to a commonality without relying on typical pictorial etiquette. Brennan’s new series steps away from his previous hard-edged realistic framework as it moves into the realm of magical realism. Robert Treloar's new series leaves behind the straightforward realism he is most known for to reveal a more abstracted and contemplative reality. Treloar began his career painting abstracts by layering different systems of patterning and color relationships as a representation of the basic way in which he saw the world around him. Switching to realism, while living in New York, Treloar added more layers to his approach with realistic depictions that allowed for layers of meaning. Unveiling a new body of work the artist returns to abstraction, after decades of realism, affirming the foundations of his distinctive style. Using oil and acrylic, Treloar works with positive and negative space, allowing for the juxtaposition of connection and tension in each layer of paint. Viscerally appealing, his large-scale canvases are imbued with movement of shapes, color and his own abstracted reality. In the adjunct gallery, Susan Street Fine Art will present a group show featuring paintings, sculpture, and mixed-media works by Susan Davidoff, Joseph Maruska, Will Robinson, and James Shay. NEW WORKS by Michael Brennan and Robert Treloar runs March 18th – May 30th, 2010. An Artist Reception will take place on Thursday, April 1st, from 6-9pm.
