Event Description This dazzling display of ten quilts from the collection of Dr. Maude Southwell Wahlman presents an indigenous American art, an alternative aesthetic tradition quite different from that seen in widely known European-American quilts. African American quilts are characterized by strips, bold colors, large designs, asymmetry, multiple patterns, and improvisation. These quilts are unique in American arts because they show a combination or creolization of African textile ideas and symbols with American traditions. This exhibition is one of a series of programs that is a part of Oceanside Public Library’s Big Read event. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The 2012 Oceanside Big Read presents the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, the acclaimed novel by African American writer Zora Neale Hurston.

Event Description SAN DIEGO, CA – Classic words of wisdom are used daily to inspire hope, reason and contemplation. This exhibition, “Works of Wisdom” at Thumbprint Gallery beginning January 14, presents works by an eclectic mix of artists using famous quotes as their stimulus. Not to be missed is the work of Mike Maxwell. This San Diego born artist has exhibited all over the world and recently exhibited at the pioneering art platform Art Basel in Miami. Stone blue faces devoid of skin tone are Maxwell’s signature figure that enables him to explore themes of race, sex and religion with an abstract style. His use of colour is thoughtful and poignant, while emphasizing his message. He frequently uses black and white with a strong, cold blue typically on his subject’s skin but also in scenes of isolated windmills and buildings. Other artists exhibiting include Katherine Brannock, Franky Agostino, Isaias Crow, Eric Wixon, MR. DVICE, Jimmy Ovadia, Carly Ealey, Gloria Muriel, Michael Mahaffey and more.
