Mission Statement
or Service he Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is one of only 17 nonprofit membership libraries in the United States, and one of three west of the Mississippi. Founded in 1899, the Athenaeum provides library resources in music and the arts and presents over 200 programs and cultural events annually at two venues in La Jolla and Logan Heights in San Diego. This rare cultural institution offers a depth and accessibility of resources and programs found nowhere else in the region.
The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library will host its next A List music and art mixer on Thursday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m., in its historic library in La Jolla. The Athenaeum A List (our membership group for young professionals and art and music lovers) presents a mixer surrounded by the new exhibition Robert Kushner: Scriptorium: Devout Exercises of the Heart. Kushner’s 1,000 paintings adorning 18th and 19th century book texts will be pinned around the antique walls of the Athenaeum Library. The feminine floral paintings entangled with the masculine texts create a romance consummated by paint and ink. This intercourse of decorative and utilitarian arts births an exotic aesthetic, both complementary and dynamic.
Musical guest will be The Heavy Guilt. The six-piece rock band will paint the library with live music, overlaying warmth and gravelly blues onto their fevered and energetic music. Come to the A List to decorate your soul with the heights of good art, music, conversation, and beer, as well as to meet other young art and music lovers. Avant Garden sponsors include Karl Strauss, Whisknladle, and Cups.
About The A List
The A List is a membership group for young professionals of Generation X and Y who are interested in expanding their horizons in music and art. Founded in 2005, The A List hosts six events a year at either the library in La Jolla or the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts art studio off-site in University Heights. Each 21+ event features an art exhibition, live music by a local band/artist, food and drinks, and a communal art project to inspire your creativity. More information on A List membership can be found at www.ljathenaeum.org/alist.
